@kraft Austin is a culture void because it is dedicated to pop culture.I don't think government should fund any of this stuff, but industry could step up.

@monarchist KMFA started when the only commercial classical station switched formats back in the 60s. There is a great amount of support—the 200k is only 7% of the budget. IMO, it's one thing to end funding (I do think there is value in the government supporting the arts but fair that others disagree), but clawing back already approved funding is regretful and is painful for a lot of non-profit organizations that didn't expect to fill this gap immediately.

@kraft Lots of things are painful; I agree it's an unfortunate time crunch. After the Katrina reporting, I no longer want government to support NPR.

@monarchist that's part of the kicker. KMFA isn't an NPR station. I think they syndicate a program from NPR that makes sense for classical music, but they aren't an affiliate. Austin's NPR station isn't associated with KMFA at all. CPB supported a lot of things that are now collateral damage if the intent of the claw back was to hit NPR or PBS (in general or their news operations specific).

@kraft Unfortunately, the nature of the rule has to be to revoke federal funding of all outlets, or it seems like favoritism. And won't it be nice to be free from government control?

@monarchist eh, again, cutting funding... I disagree with but fine. The claw back is my main issue. It runs counter to my inclination that the government should honor what it said it would do.But, federal funds are well-known for having a ton of strings attached. Carve out any organizations that produce or broadcast national news [some type of ability to broadcast local information allowed, which also negates the criticism that it would impact local news], etc.
