i'm using matrix now for a group chat. most of what i see is that the message is encrypted and can't be decrypted. when i open another client, some do show properly, but there's still some who can't be decrypted. and now i said something from my desktop client, and the other client claims "encrypted by a device not verified by its owner", while the device i used explicitly claims the message is send from a verified device..

people say matrix is better than xmpp bc it's more usable for normies or w/e. and you know what, after working with "normie" software at work, it's true, the experience with that software is just as bad too :blobfoxnotamused:

@ilja it sucks that you're having a bad experience with matrix, I'm sorry. We are working hard to fix problems like what you've seen, but clearly it's not worked for you.It sounds like some of your clients are confused about your crypto identity. You might be able to fix it by doing "Reset my identity" on one of your clients, then creating a recovery key on the same client, and then verifying your identity using that recovery key on the other clients.Obviously you shouldn't need all this :-(

@andybalaam you don't have to apologise for it 🤗 i know you're also working on it, it's honestly one thing giving me hope that some day such issues may indeed be in the past ^^' for me now, it's just for this one group chat which is only temporary, so i'll live with it, it's just a tad frustrating. fwiw, if it helps or relevant to you, the desktop client is neochat (25.04.3, kde client ), which i use as main client. the other one is element in browser, which i use as fallback. but i don't verify that one bc i clear cookies when closing my browser and assume this verification won't be kept either. i don't install element bc last time i did that, it took ~1GB of ram, and I only have 8GB total.

@ilja I'm not sure where neochat is in terms of the crypto identity stuff but it might help if you ask neochat to reset your identity. It's becoming increasingly necessary to verify your identity at all times, even if you are using a throw-away client, because the people you are chatting with have no idea who you are if you don't. Soonish most clients will force you to verify on login because you're not really secure without it.
