@miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi Fridges don't bother me that much. You can still buy many non-smart fridges thankfully. But TVs nowadays however are completely screwed. There are little to no TVs you can still buy that do not have "smart" functionality.

@SuperDicq @miiamustang I think you used to be able to buy 'commercial displays' that are basically just smart tvs with the 'smart' taken out. Don't know if they've patched that exploit yet tho

@VD15@pl.valkyrie.world @miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi The Finnish brand Salora still makes non-smart TVs. I own a 55 inch one of those.Unfortunately the reason why they are non-smart is because they are targeting a cheaper market segment so the panels themselves aren't super high quality, like it doesn't come with fancy LED panels or something like that. It's all LCD, but at least it is 4K resolution tho.

@lain@lain.com @VD15@pl.valkyrie.world @miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi Buying a smart TV and not connecting it to the internet does not remove the proprietary software.

@lain@lain.com @VD15@pl.valkyrie.world @miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi My Salora TV however has very simple and non-upgradable firmware. It being proprietary is not an issue here.

@VD15@pl.valkyrie.world @lain@lain.com @miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi @sun@shitposter.world Yes, it still bothers me that they never give the GNU project any credit and that they are probably still using proprietary software on top of GNU/Linux.But a step on the freedom ladder is still a step on the freedom ladder so I'll take it.

@VD15@pl.valkyrie.world @lain@lain.com @miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi @sun@shitposter.world I like how Dankpods often points out how a lot of modern stuff just keeps getting worse and worse. He's very opinionated on the tech that he uses, I appreciate that. It's just so often it feels like he is almost approaching all the points of free software but just not quite getting there fully. A bit frustrating sometimes.

@VD15@pl.valkyrie.world @lain@lain.com @miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi @sun@shitposter.world I can't believe they actually rebuilt the engine and clean out the Nutella. That's some dedication to the bit right there. Nobody would ever save a cheap ass car like that if it has a seized engine.

@VD15@pl.valkyrie.world @lain@lain.com @miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi @sun@shitposter.world And not to mention that they ruined the threads of the camshaft bolts and were forced to random bolts they had lying around not even intended for this engine.I assume the only reason this car even works is because it is such an underpowered and undertuned piece of junk that doesn't really care about tight tolerances anyways.

@SuperDicq @miiamustang ugh, modern smart TVs. Some *require* an internet connection now, even if you're only using wired inputs (ie, HDMI).A housemate connected the Hisense in our living room to WiFi to watch Netflix when we were gone one weekend. I went into the menu and told it to forget the WiFi network, and it just LIED to me about doing so (I could still see it chattering away via my router UI and PiHole). Had to change the WiFi password to get it disconnected again!

@notthatdelta@furry.engineer @miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi "Smart" functionality is still harmful even if you decide to not connect it to the network. It either needs to not have "smart" functionality or the "smart" functionality needs to be fully free software so the user has control over what it does.

@notthatdelta@furry.engineer @miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi This is the sort of stuff why I don't trust proprietary malware at all. They can just lie to their users and get away with it.

@VD15 @miiamustang @SuperDicq Commercial displays now run the same proprietary OS, but those don't tend to refuse to function without the internet (in fact, some refuse to run certain proprietary software like netflix's players - although that was only done with the bad intention of stopping non-commercial users from buying a TV with a decent PSU) - so you can use those without connecting them to the internet.
