@eee I'm sure there's reason for the lower weight oil, but I also have heard that once the engine wears it becomes less tight on tolerance and you can fix certain things with heavier oils. IDK how that works mechanistically.

@BowsacNoodle oil quality and oil change intervals/heat/age are a lot more important, theyre using thin oils because of MPG requirements - not because of good engineering foresight for long engine life

@eee NOx creating smog is annoying. They could tackle this with a catalytic converter change, but they'd rather squish everything tighter and run small aluminum block engines that die earlier. Volvo and Ford both looked at radiators to convert ozone to O2, and Volvo's option was a cheap coating that might've worked if mass-adopted for areas that actually have a smog problem (dense cities with a lot of sun).https://www.jalopnik.com/how-volvo-once-used-a-catalys...

@eee All that said, efficient lean engines were definitely a better product for total "environmental impact" than cars made of strange materials with noticeable fatigue limits that need frequently replaced. Death to planned obsolescence.

Brief period in the 80s and 90s when some engines has ultra-lean-burn where they'd cut fuel as much as possible, computers made it possible to do this without frying the valves or getting knock or miss. But catalytic converters really only work when the engine is at stoichiometric so that idea died. But diesel is always lean burn, so you can just do that. And if you really want to save fuel, delete the DPF and reprogram it so it stops throwing fuel into the DPF to burn it clean.
