Aaaand now I know how I'll waste the rest of my vacation time. There is a "Backrooms" themed "Industrial Skyblock" type of minecraft modpack. It's NOT a monster fest. It's very strange. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZTlzvYgMNc

There are some videos and they put a lot of effort into making a big, but very curious and strange world. There are tasks you can do and things to build, but often I find something else to do. I think technically you can "escape" by building a bunch of crazy gadgets and making a portal home, if you like a game to have an ending.

@kevingranade Aw really? I'm kind of obsessed with it. I think it was very janky early on, but it's gotten a lot of love ...Though if you don't like it because the recipes can be complex you might like this more as it simplifies many recipes because of the very limited resources in the world.

If you maybe played minecraft a decade ago, or just dabbled in mods you should take a look at what's out there now.Not only is loading mods and playing them easier than ever. (And if you bought minecraft for ten bucks back in the day you still own it, and it's free) But, the mods are so high quality and creative. There is also a lot of new content in the base game. I'm floored by the quality of the work.

@SnoopJ What do you mean ownership of the game?I only started playing when it first went for sale. Then I forgot about it, but when I looked into it a decade later my account was still there.

@SnoopJ I see your point, though I don't know if the huge modded ecosystem would exist if weren't set up this way. And I give them credit for pouring out new content without ever going the DLC route or suddenly saying "we don't support it and now you can't play it"But, I can see the downsides.

@SnoopJ I guess what gets me over the hump is all of the creative programming people create in the space for the love of just making fun, so I will put up with "things" to be there to cheer them on. It's what lets me still use things like tumblr, and twitter (until the latter became ... broken)And you always risk that, someone could just turn it all off at the source and break things. Then you end up here I suppose.

@futurebird Well, there are complications to this sort of thing. I did buy Minecraft for $10 or whatever it was way back then, but I don't still own it because Microsoft closed my account (and I let them because I don't want to have a Microsoft account.)This is why I hate online DRM with a burning passion. At least back in the day with Mojang it was just a username and a password. MS can ban you for example, for logging in to your account on a Switch. (Yes, my account got banned that way once. They would not unlock it until I gave them a private cellphone number either. There was no way to communicate via email or anything else with anyone. A friend let me use theirs, but I've been uncomfortable with it since, so when it warned of impeding expiration from non-use I let it.)

@futurebird are you saying I can finally live out my dream of building a transit system in the backrooms?

@futurebird I’ve played Skyblock variants before, but it is a little too tense for me to enjoy. How does “industrial skyblock” even work?

@Extra_Special_Carbon At this point the word "skyblock" has little to do with being on a block in the sky and more to do with being in a situation with very constrained resources where you need to build up from nothing. This is why the backrooms is such a nice fit. It's a barebones survival horror folktale. So, instead of being trapped on a grass-block trying to grow trees, you are collecting furniture and trying to craft things from it.

@Extra_Special_Carbon There have been some "skyblock" variations that took place underground in a cave of nothing but stone... and one that was neat at an Arctic outpost. This is more along those lines. "industrial" means that you are able to slowly build up to making automated system using the create mod to make the resource generation more fun and less of a grind. (I have no patience for grinds)So you can automate many of the things you need to do. Or just wander around and explore.

@Extra_Special_Carbon There have been MANY attempts at a "backrooms horror game" and none of them seemed interesting to me. They were all too linear, or they leaned into the jump-scares and monsters angle too much. The horror of backrooms is the horror of an infinite cobblestone generator. The horror of emptiness, scale. But, that's also what makes it fun. With some "industrial" mods you feel like you are kind of destroying the world. Here is one that's already done for you.

@futurebird I’ve been off Minecraft lately, but I’ll have this in mind for later. It’s a great game, and I love designing and building the machines. Do this does sound like fun.I’m more into running my Sims lives right now.
