       Some of you might remember the TIG welder I found lying in a desert wash a few months back. On Thursday night, I took it to a friend's place because he knows how to TIG weld. I wanted him to try it out and see if it seems like a decent machine before I spend money buying a gas regulator and a tank of argon gas for it. He tried it and said it seemed pretty good . He told me to give it a try and gave me his mask and gloves. I ran a couple of quick beads, like an inch long at most. I was probably welding for all of two minutes. Now I have a sunburn in the outline of my tank top on my chest. I've heard that TIG is a lot harsher with UV than other kinds of welding, and now I've experienced it for myself. At least the sunburn is pretty light. (P.S. Do not scold me or splain to me in my comments as though I haven't already learned my lesson)

       @oisin All the electrical weldings can get you, but TIG is the worst. I've been sunburned by MIG before, but that was from welding for quite a while on the highest amperage setting. This took just a couple minutes. This is why you're not supposed to look at the arc

       @MLE_online I do need to learn to do it properly. I have a MIG welder staring at me down in shed. No helmet tho.

       @oisin @MLE_online Don't get a really cheap one! They suck! For years I suffered with a Harbor Freight unit, til I tried on a Miller brand. Holy crap so much better. Faster to switch on, better protection and less dark, etc. Cheap out on pliers etc, not eye protection!
