I can pick up our cat, Pica without a problem but she has always fought with my husband. Just squirming so much. We've found out why. She's a right handed cat. My husband is left handed. If you try to hold her on your left shoulder she's used to it, but try to hold her on your right shoulder? She freaks out. I tried to pick her up "left handed" and suddenly had the same problems as my husband. So if you have this issue, try switching. He can now pick her up. #PicaTheCat

I'm trying to pick her up left-handed to desensitize her. I think my husband is scared of squishing her too hard, and that's also a problem. I keep explaining she's made of rubber and loves to be squished. Anyway.

@futurebird Is there a cat/felid species called pica? I was sure there was, but now I can't find it. Perhaps I got this idea from your cat's name?

@dawngreeter Isn't it bizarre? Every cat I've ever met is different and has a dozen quirks like this. I think they are capable of learning, but who knows what they will learn or why.

@futurebird My old cat was the same!! He only liked sitting on the right shoulder. He was just a big ragdoll you could cart around to your heart's content, but he'd always wiggle his way over to the other shoulder.

@futurebird I have definitely lived with some odd, odd cats. One dude cat I had would "steal" a kitten from our neighbours. And always the same one. And he'd groom it and lie with it like a mom cat would. But this is entirely a new one for me. So interesting.

@futurebird @dawngreeter I think every cat I've lived with had preferences, or requirements (depending on cat), about how they got picked up, some much more so than others. In some cases it was clear injury was the cause, but in most cases there was no reason known to me.

@llewelly @dawngreeter Pica also requires a 100 percent wool blanket before she gets on your lap. You may think this would mean you could keep her off of your lap by not having the blanket she likes, but she will pace around, tap you, and make such an issue of it until you get a 100 percent wool blanket.Should you get the 80 percent wool blanket? you Fool! she will get on your lap but then move around so much it's annoying. Then you will get the correct blanket. We have been TRAINED.

@futurebird @llewelly @dawngreeter My boy won't sleep on the bed unless I put the 100% wool beadspread on it. Has it's uses though, you can put it in a designated spot on the bed and he'll just sleep there rather than somehow taking over the entire bed.

@futurebird omg I just picked up Stella backwards and she didn't fuss at all (I didn't hold her for very long because I didn't want to push my luck)And it kind of makes sense now too, because I saw something recently about cats usually sleeping on their left side but she normally sleeps on her right side.

@futurebirdHoward is very much a right-shoulder cat. Sling him diagonally across your torso, and he's good. The twist is that he's rotationally consistent about it: he also loves to be held on his back like a baby (pls rub belly) with his head toward the left shoulder. His brother was the opposite: he had to be on my left shoulder. And don't try to hold him upside down.

@futurebird Oh my goodness, it never even occurred to me to try something like this! Most cats are left-pawed supposedly and I am left-handed at cat picking up I guess (I thought that was being right-handed since I pet with my right.)I'll have to give this a shot with one of the cats that normally hates it when I pick them up!
