@ForbiddenDreamer It's because basically nobody but the Amish are getting married these days and those types take their vows seriously.

The original chart is the fraction of marriages ending in divorce. Fewer people marrying shouldn't affect the ratio. What could be happening is that the few people who do marry are more serious about it.

@BroDrillard @ForbiddenDreamer My argument would be fewer people are getting married due to the social/financial concerns around it so there are just as many long-term breakups, but they are no longer being counted because they're not divorces. So yes, the end-function on the chart looks like more people are serious about it, but it's also possibly the case that those people weren't the ones getting divorced at high rates to begin with and are the remaining cohort who haven't abandoned the institution entirely.

@BroDrillard @snappler @ForbiddenDreamer I think with folks getting married later and the cost of housing you just stay rather than leave.

@Heil_Honkler @tyler @ForbiddenDreamer Marriage is a status symbol now, allegedly. Just like having kids (only the rich and the poor have a bunch).

@cjd Just a small reminder that these statistics, though relevant from a sociological POV, do not reflect the actual chances of an individual marriage to succeed. We are all different and unique. People get scared a lot by these statistics in general and I think that this is a good reminder that when *you* get married, your chances are not 50%, 60% or whatever this rate is. They are based on who you are and who your spouse is, which is something you get to control. 🤗

@cjd Yes, this is why it's a good idea to point our the thing that I mentioned. I used to look at these statistics like they apply to me some time ago and it was quite revelatory to realise that this does not really say anything about me or my actual chances. I think there are people who look at this statistics and get scared off to give marriage a chance, when they should not.

@cjd What makes this 'average person' particularly interesting in this case is that when we talk about chances to get a disease, it's often not in your actual control and there's little you can do to avoid it. However, in a marriage, it's about behaviour most of the time - of two unique people. That is something one has way more control, every day. I can understand why it's relevant to my 'succes' of not getting a disease to look at 'average person' statistics, but in a marriage, not so much.
