@ipg Hm. I didn't think it effected most mastodon instances because they wouldn't be big enough? If so, then fedi just became unviable for UK users entirely.

@fireborn @ipg I would just use Tor or a free VPN to bypass it.Instances could even start hosting hidden services for anonymity networks such as Tor and I2P.

@light @ipg I'm trying to understand how this effects us as instance admins, what steps we need to take, etc.

@fireborn @ipg I think the best option is to start trying to get everyone to federate over Tor/I2P as UK instances might have to hide their IP addresses.I have heard some instances already do.

@light @ipg What about instances not hosted in the UK, but can be accessed by UK users (most of them). I think that's where the confusion is.

@fireborn @ipg They ought to still be able to federate with instances hosted in the UK, wouldn't you say? For example, hosted on a server in the closet of a UK user.As for simply accessing a non-UK server from the UK, A VPN or Tor should be sufficient. What do you think?

@light @ipg I suppose, but from an instance admin prospective. If I host my server outside the UK, I must block UK IP addresses from accessing the service, yeah?

@fireborn @ipg I mean, if you do that but aren't a UK citizen, the most the UK government can do is force British ISPs and/or DNS resolvers to block it, which amounts to the same thing, so why obey in advance?Obligatory IANAL
