Buried in Proton's AI announcement today is a pretty shocking detail about their service 👀 Because of legal uncertainty around Swiss government proposals to introduce mass surveillance — proposals that have been outlawed in the EU — Proton is moving most of its physical infrastructure out of Switzerland. Lumo will be the first product to move.#Proton #Switzerland #Privacy #EuroStack #ProtonMail

@jonah that's rather rich coming from a CEO who very actively supports and champions Nazis, while claiming Proton is 'completely politically neutral.'(Stop fucking using Proton. Doubly so when they're introducing "AI" bullshit.)

@rootwyrm @jonah Honestly, after de-googlefying almost all my online presence (which was fucking exhausting and expensive), I have no more gas in tank to leave Proton just because someone on Mastodon said so.Pay me to migrate elsewhere once again or go fuck yourself.

@fionor @rootwyrm @jonah I’m not gonna end with such a statement as you but I agree with the rest of your post. Several years ago I was split between Proton and Tutanota, which at the time were the two recommendations from the professional privacy industry. But then people on Mastodon were like “don’t use Tuta because X Y Z!!!” And I went with Proton. Years later, it’s been my primary driver and all my stuff is there now for years and years.

@megabyteghost@masto.hackers.town @fionor@mas.to @rootwyrm@weird.autos @jonah@neat.computerThat's a permanent problem with online activism — no one's robe is white enough, people who are not well-versed in all this and who, at least for now, aren't interested in self-hosting are looking at all this… and stick with their good olde Apple/MS/Google accounts — because why bother if every choice isn't good enough and everyone is the same?

@m0xEE @fionor @rootwyrm @jonah if I’m wrong no matter what I choose, I’m going to choose the wrong that serves me best. Life is too short to act otherwise.

> Proton is moving most of its physical infrastructure out of Switzerland....To where? We're supposed to believe that literally anywhere else in Europe is more secure than the home of billionaires' secret bank accounts?

@vic @jonah Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but the whole Proton VPN "loophole" in Swiss law was that they couldn't disclose the information of VPN users who had "Swiss" emails, which Proton mail qualified for. So to be safe from the run-of-the-mill legal fishing expeditions for Proton VPN, you also had to have a ProtonMail account (and use that to register).I don't know what the "mass surveillance proposals" are.Either way, not good for (Proton VPN) users, though.
