Part of the conceit of social media is that it's an uncontrolled environment. It's anti- "messaging" -- Naturally media and politicians and companies hate this and have been trying to "fix" it. Someone once bought a whole social media network over it.

Consider a response from Obama, the person, who has never used social media, not really, but consider something simple such as: "I'm so glad you brought up the Russian interference in the 2016 election again. I think a lot of people forget THAT even happened."

Frankly, part of what made the Epstein scandal come back alive was that the white-house *attempted it issue a statement* and shut everything down from 10,000ft. I think that really alienated people. In my opinion "issuing statements" comes off as defensive. If you don't want to get in it ... silence might be better.

Everyone acts like using social media is some mysterious skill, but it's not that different from talking directly to the press or doing a town hall.You know, I'm a very cynical voter. I always vote and I always vote to make things as easy as possible to work in other ways, locally. But, I can also see that this kind of engagement is something people are seeking out and I think it matters if you want to win. And it's not too much to ask leaders to enter "uncontrolled" conversations.

@Fat_Farang That never made any damn sense to me if I'm honest about it. Frankly I think it was just paranoia. TikTok isn't doing much politically, but I do think it's slowly making *some* people less attached to reality. But would they do that anyway? IDK.

@queenofnewyork His constant ranting gives people who like him (listen I know that is hard to imagine but some people do like him) the illusion of access and connection. It's all very parasocial to use a favorite concept from tumblr.Trump seems like a real person and I think that's counted for a lot with the kind of people who vote for him.

@apLundell I have mixed feelings on this. I think that being distant like that can be a way to be too much of a control freak about the conversation.It's possible to go too far in the other direction.

Or, if you looked closer you found that conservatives thought "China is making the kids gay" (WHY would they do that?) and centrist Dems thought "China is making them not want to vote blue no matter who"Just whatever thing kids were doing they didn't like was "China" Now if teens suddenly started hating Taiwan they might have something.
