I kind of stole this joke from someone who posted it as an image without a description, but I changed it up. I *would* have just boosted that post, but the image wasn't described and as I started to write alt text I thought of some changes to make... so the moral is if you wanna get boosted include the alt text!

@futurebird Hello, European person here.In our countries under the oppressing thumb of ruthless socialist governments, all listed consumer prices are required to be end prices including all taxes and fees, by law.

@futurebird Bying stuff in the US is very confusing to me. It's often tricky to find out the actual total, even just from sales tax. (Granted, I haven't been to the US since October 2016, so maybe it has changed?)I'm grateful that we have a law that requires the actual total to be presented when you buy something. The law was made mostly because down payment plans were often misleading, but it's a good general rule.

@tobi With the local places it's kind of the other extreme. I call "Otto" and he asks if I'm sick (which I am if I'm ordering delivery) He tells not *not* to tip his nephew, "same price for you!" but I tip him anyways.

@futurebird I will never understand why in the US never the true prices for goods are shown - Itβ€˜s so simpler here in Europe, the item on the shelf is labeled as 1.69 - so I pay 1.69 and if I use e.g Lieferando (which own GrubHub) the 12.49 pizza costs me 12.49 (and if there is a delivery fee or a PayPal fee, because Lieferando charges the cut PayPal takes from them)(2% atm) it is already mentioned before you picked your first item.

@futurebird Yeah, my grocery store is the same way. Delivery starts with a 30% markup then there's the delivery fee, service fee, other service fee, other fee, subscription, other subscription, fuel surcharge, taxes on the food, taxes on the fees, and they pay minimum wage or less so there's a driver tip too.

@futurebird Tangentially related:My son & I went to see Superman yesterday (8/10 recommend) & picked up Popeyes chicken after. We tried to find a sit down restaurant, but our only options were other chain restaurants because I live in crappy food USA. These chains cost 2 to 4x more. The meal value in order of item:1st: Spicy Fries2nd: Biscuit...6th: 9,000 calorie mango lemonade...17: chicken ...92: Popeyes spicy saucemeal x2 = $33Buying prepared food is depressing these days.

@jmax @futurebird I've found ChowNow to be pretty decent at this compared to the alternatives. There are 2 fees: a delivery fee that goes to the restaurant and something they call a "support local fee" (stupid name but whatever) which goes to them in the place of a commission to the restaurant.

@futurebird And then you also notice that the base price already incorporates a 40% markup over if you just went to the restaurant and ordered the meal. And you need to add a good enough tip for the delivery driver to be getting minium wage. Also the company running the delivery service claims to be running at a loss.No one even knows where all the money is going, but the snakes and ghosts insist it's not their fault.

@futurebird I don't know if it's a generational thing or what, but dad would "go get takeout" when mom didn't want to cook. We'd phone in the order and he'd drive to the restaurant, pay for the food, pick it up, and drive it home.
