The New York Times Pitchbot creates satiric examples of headlines reflecting the "Paper of Record" fetish for (among other things) normalizing right wing extremism. The headline below -- "Should ICE Agents Be Allowed to Wear Masks? It Depends Whom You Ask." -- is NOT from Pitchbot. Head=>desk.

@dangillmor I'm annoyed how the issue of police and ICE employees using physical force but refusing to identify themselves is being conflated with masks."Masked Men" becomes a shorthand for "people who refuse to tell you who they are"The real issue isn't the mask, the masks are part of an incorrect belief that people working for the state should be able to do so anonymously. No you may not. If that is a problem then perhaps there is something wrong with the job you have been asked to do.

@dangillmor In the abstract, if people show up and start grabbing you or people you know and won't tell you who they are or allow it to be filmed by 3rd parties then one ought to be able to fight back and try to escape because how do you know it's not just... randos kidnapping people?I say in the abstract since I have first hand examples of this NOT being the case.

@dangillmor This is why it is very helpful if you can film and question ICE and police when they show up. The more people doing it the better. If you are white, speak English, look like a "professional" even better. If they aren't doing anything wrong a video and saying who they are should not be a problem. It's not some radical thing to want to have a record of something extraordinary and alarming like an arrest or "detainment."Don't be surprised when they try to get you to stop.

@dangillmor I've been threatened with arrest for filming NYPD. "You're obstructing this arrest."I was not. I was 15' away. On the sidewalk and silent. "Want to go with them?"I took half a step back and checked that my video app was uploading since I fully expected the phone to be knocked out of my hand. I was very scared, but there were a few other people standing with me. The cop then claimed that the six of us were "obstructing police activity" because there were six of us?

@dangillmor Ultimately, they let the kid go. The small group of people who gathered to watch changed the course of those events five years ago. I still see that kid around the neighborhood. He's all grown up now and always waves even though we don't know each other's names. None of us ever said anything. We simply saw NYPD roughing up a 14 year old by the skate park. I think they asked the kid a question and he tried to skate away and way maybe rude? So they decided to beat him.

@dangillmor Perhaps this child was secretly a master criminal who has been living under our noses all this time. Wouldn't the heroic police like to have his arrest documented so they can be congratulated and celebrated for their bravery? But when we started filming they got very angry. Only because we watched did they stop to think what they must have looked like. Two huge guys shoving a child around.

@dangillmor I'd seen evidence and read about police lying. But, to have a police officer lie directly to your face with such ease changes something in you. It's causes all of the romantic images from cop TV shows to wither away. It wasn't just the lie, (told with us both knowing it was a lie), but the anger, the contempt and the way the pair of them worked together. The people of the neighborhood were just a problem to them. "bunch of dogooders"That's right, Officer. That is what we are.

@futurebird @dangillmor I could not agree more!No one in government should be anonymous, least of all people using violent force to incarcerate people in horrific conditions without trial or charge.

@gbargoud @dangillmor I had an app that saved video to a google drive as you recorded it but I need to test that it still works probably.

@futurebird @dangillmor I know someone who was arrested for "assaulting an officer" by allegedly kicking him. This lady walks with crutches and cannot stand on one foot long enough to kick anything, but the cop lied right in the judge's face with her leaning on the crutches right in front of him. Zero consequences for the cop.

@futurebird @dangillmor The *most* *charitable* interpretation of armed, masked men who arrest people while refusing to identify themselves is that they are, by definition, the Secret Police. Every other interpretation is worse than that.I don't want to live in a country that has Secret Police.

@futurebird @dangillmor it's even crazier when you watch a cop hold a gun to your friends head and say 'i could blow you away right now and nothing would happen to me'yup. this was in Baltimore, 1999
