Has you employer ever attempted to tell you how to use social media, eg what is acceptable to post? (I apologize for the limited options. )

@futurebird I am advised only to make it clear that I post only for myself and not for my employer. If that counts?

@futurebird Probably, but I don't remember. I have a general restriction on what I can tell people anyways. It's all about safe guarding corporate and guest data (I work in Target tech).

@futurebird never been told. Self censor to not use the company name on Mastodon, or interact with anything that's linked to the companyOn LinkedIn, where the company name is linked to my name, I only share blogs and job openings that relate to the company. Self censor on everything else

@futurebird Where does this fit?“<company> respects its Representatives' right to express themselves on personal Social Media while expecting them to exercise good judgment when their posts could be associated with <company>.”That last part is the kicker because while I generally don't mention my employer directly (and I’ve removed references to my LI profile recently) it isn't very difficult to figure it out, I think.

@futurebird I had a talk with the head of the organization when I was asked to sign a social media policy. I said upfront that I post pseudonymously, that my accounts are locked (except this one) and I do not have followers within the organization, and that I do post about alcohol (which could be seen as an issue). They thanked me for the info and told me to carry on.

@futurebird Most employers are more sneaky about it. They won't tell you how to use it -- but you're supposed to follow their rules and you're supposed to already know what they are without being told.

@futurebird an employer told me to create a Facebook account because not having one in my name signified that I used a pseudonym, which means I have things to hide

@futurebird when I worked for newspapers the possibility of my opinions being connected with them was a concern even though I didn’t work on the journalism side. But I appreciated Axios saying something like “racism isn’t a partisan issue, so if you have your Axios hoodie on at a Black Lives Matter rally, that’s fine by us.”I think the logic was that “which party is pro-racism?” would make any complainers back down.

@futurebird I’ve gotten my wrist slapped a few times but, and this surprises me a bit, only over very reasonable stuff.“Hey please don’t bad mouth another team”, “hey I know there’s no actual info in that screenshot but the thing you screenshotted isn’t public”, etc, where I was like yeah fair enough, my bad.

@futurebird in some industries and situations, there's legal requirements around sharing information, and if you're publicly associated with the company it doesn't matter if you use their name or not.I'd add another option to the survey reading 'yes, but only to the extent legally required'

@futurebirdI'm not sure they know what a pseudonym is.For the "under my real name" it is "recommandations", and mainly for linkedin. But still.(And they encourage us to post. A lot.)

@futurebird There's general rules around not disclosing internal or sensitive information to others; that applies to social media as well of course. And the society wide standard that you can't do socially unacceptable things in public on your time off and expect no repercussions for your job.But no, they never mention social media specifically.

@futurebird Not per se. But I was in charge of the PR page for JPL/IPAC at one time, and I had pretty strict responsibilities for how I could use that.
