@aliss That math is only true for plaintext HTTP which is very rare these days

@aliss Hang on a second, that is barely x2 longer than my reflex speed (I've got some delays)This has got to be a tee-hee conversation about something extremely niche and technical, 600ms isn't exactly the longest wait in the world lmao

@RunawayDanish @aliss it's not, assuming zhe rest loads in one more trip. but what about when a site has images? content loaded from elsewhere, like embeds? custom fonts? 5 fucking megabytes of javascript? every slow-start bandwidzh doubling incurs anozher round-trip, so it can add up quickly. SSL also adds overhead.and zhis is to say nozhing of unreliable networks (like satellite). bandwidzh measurement is done by checking for dropped packets. zhis assumes zhat zhe network itself never drops packets, only when max bandwidzh is exceeded. if your network itself loses a bunch of packets, zhose assets might just end up being sent at just a handful of packets per round-trip. now even a basic site is taking 10 sec to load. and each server contacted will have its own slow-start process.zhe takeaway here isn't zhat your site should actually be <14kb, it's zhat it should be as small as possible. even if it loads quickly enough *for you*, zhat means very little for a global audience

@aliss « Also HTTPS requires two additional round trips before it can do the first one ». With the move to https everywhere, going from 14kb to 15kb is no longer 100% increase of load time, but just 33%…

@lanodan mhm most devs still have a mental model where HTTP is sent as text because it's easier to reason about, but it hasn't been that way for a very very long time*that said i just wanted to share the link fdkljshgsdfk im not an expert either*

@aliss Maybe this should be a challenge all students must complete to graduate: hosting an entire website off of a floppy disk except downladable content. Even still, I find the thought of running amazingly feature rich programs off of a floppy to be particularly sexy. I'm sure it's not being done due to the massive volume of optimization that has to be done to make it work though.
