I went out with some friends and one bar we went to said they needed to scan all our IDs. I said, "I don't let people scan my ID" (I have a sticker on the back to prevent it). They let me though anyway, but this girl called me an asshole for making a big deal about it. I said I wasn't an asshole, I got them to opt me out, they could have all opted out too. She didn't understand tracking, "they track us anyway," .. "they don't track me. I don't even have any Google services on my phone. I run ad block. ... and even if no one else does what I do, I can help everyone reduce their tracking footprint."It got heated and she said something retarded and I slapped the table at one point. Then her fat boyfriend said if I hate the table again he'd break my nose. I apologized for hitting the table, but I reminded him it was her girlfriend who started all this. It was her who called me an asshole! The subject was changed and we moved on. Everyone else was nice....I don't feel good about tonight. I rarely see that couple, but If I see them again, I'm going to start, "hey, it's the guy who threatened to break my nose."One of my best friends is dating someone new. He hasn't had a girlfriend in years and she seems really nice. I'm really happy for him and I try to remember that about tonight .. but I'm not happy about tonight. I really hate people in general right now.

@djsumdog idk, feels like a pick your battles sort of moment. I've reached the point in my life where I don't care about my location being tracked because all of my crime can be done from anywhere. like, I wouldn't have been shocked if your post read "the bar refused to let me in because I have a sticker over my ID's barcode"and normies 1000% are going to overreact to sth like hitting a table, especially when dudebro can take the opportunity to look like a hardass defending his girl

I feel like scanning my ID is a good hill to stand on. It's unnecessary. I'm working on a post about it and I'm going to start interviewing bar owners about it soon. I also know my city councilman and want to talk to him about "opt out" city legislation once I do some interviews with bar managers and get some of their responses. I know it doesn't affect most normal people, but it does affect me. I also know a lot of bar owners (just by growing up with them) and also plan on thanking the ones who don't scan and inform them on why I think it's important. Tennessee is getting crazy on ID laws and I feel like I have to do something about it.

@djsumdog Would you be more okay with it if the device that performs the scan has no network and no writable memory? The reality is that the bar is on the hook if kids show up with fake IDs and fake IDs are getting better and better and better. at some one point, the only way to combat that is public key cryptography.

@r000t @djsumdog I feel like scanning IDs for Indians makes sense since there's documented thousands of years of deep rooted incest. There's probably 100 guys that look just like dj slum lord here just in Canada

Nope. I don't know what that devices does. They don't either. They can't. Also, the scan doesn't prevent that at all. One of the things I plan on doing is just putting a sticker with tons of fake info on it and use hidden cameras to see who just lets me in. (Those barcodes are a public standard. There are tons of libraries that will let you make them). The thing is, bouncers were good at telling obvious fakes by looking at the person and looking at the ID. You ask people questions. You watch them squirm or get indignant. We're dumbing down security with the little scan device bullshit. All it does is help with tracking. No matter how much a bouncer might say "oh it doesn't store data," they don't know that! Fuck, if I was making one of those, you better believe I would transfer every fucking barcode back to my server and save it. That's fucking data GOLD right there.

@djsumdog Sounds like another night out with the Normies. I get similar grief all the time for not complying with the system, but I persist despite the agent Smiths everywhere.

@djsumdog I'm older...I'd never enter a bar where they'd want to scan my ID (I only have a passport anyways). But I don't got a smartphone at all, so probably many people think they could never live like me.Vimalar Thakar said: "Immediately start living the truth you understand."And I got enough real friends, btw.

cc: @DCR @cryptoduke @r000t @Bernard Finally got this article up: https://battlepenguin.com/privacy-guard/Next month I want to see if I can start interviewing bar owners, to see if they'll allow people to opt out, or understand what their reasoning is.

@djsumdog The Fred Meyer grocery store chain here in the PNW now demands personal information be recorded if you purchase alcohol. The first and last time they pulled that shit on me I handed the six pack to the cashier drone and said, “Welp, looks like I’m done shopping here,” and walked out empty-handed. Now I shop at Winco.

Speedway and some Mapcos require drivers license scans. I never go to the ones that have requested that in the past (and always walkout leaving everything on the counter if they do). I don't ever buy alcohol at gas chain stations any more, just so I don't get angry if they do. Even though Publix and Foodcity don't scan, I avoid buying alcohol there because if they ever do start, I'd probably get angry. There are a few unbranded immigrant run gas stations that never check ID, and a few family owned liquor stores where I see the same guy every time, that I prefer. I'm over 40. It's quite obvious I'm over age. When I was younger you only IDed people who looked like they were in their 20s. TN recently changed their laws requiring ID if you look under 50. It's fucking stupid.

Oh man...I would probably never go to a bar that scanned IDs, I mean it would have to be a huge favor for somebody to even get me in the door. And if somebody called me an asshole, I'd let it go on the spot, but I also would probably never go out with them again.I admittedly don't have a lot of RL friends, but my motto is "if I'm not having fun and I'm not getting paid, something's wrong"
