hentai existed by the early 19th century, and samurai were formally abolished around the 1870s, so there was a brief period of history during which samurai could hypothetically read hentai and use the word 'waifu'.

@genmaicha Fact checkers have decided that this is misleading 🚫The modern "waifu" meme did not come into existence before Azumanga Daioh. As such, any samurai who may have used the word before, would have done so with a different meaning.
