@stux Oh no… It actually went much deeper. I had an Amiga 600 and it wasn’t just „making sound”. You could tell the game is loading OK by the sound made by the floppy disk drive…😅

@stux I couldn't hear the drives... above my Delta Screamer fan on my half kilo of copper cored, lapped Alpha heatsink, pushing my processor to a 50% overclock. And it was louder in the summer because I had to run with the side off to improve airflow.

@stux I still miss the sound of a modem connecting. you could always tell if your modem was going to connect or not and each modem on every persons computer was always unique with the tones. It was almost comforting in a way. Honestly...I really miss old computer noises. Someone should make a case or something that mimics those sounds similar to how EVs mimic car engine noises.

@stux I’m still upset that most computers now come without a drive activity light. Knowing if the machine had locked up was far easier when you could see it blinking at you.

@stux I still say “it’s thinking” when it takes a while for a computer to do something. doesn’t matter if I’m with someone else, it’s just force of habit at this point.

@stux Yeah, in the course of my career I have at various times been able to tell what computers are doing (eg how far through a task they are, when I will next have to pay attention to them) by listening to them. For a long time the pattern of clicks from the floppy or hard drive would do. In even earlier days we were told that the technique was "connect a loudspeaker to the A17 line" but I never did that myself.

@stux that’s the downside of my fanless laptop with no moving parts. There are times I have no way of quickly telling if it’s doing anything. Whereas my old machine… you knew from three blocks away when I was compiling something.

@stux one of the reasons I own an M1 MBA is the complete lack of a fan, my XPS 13 is pretty quiet but not silent

@stux I spent a fair bit of time in my early career working in the same room as various "servers." There was something to be said for being able to tell what they were doing by the sound different disk access patterns made :)

@stux As long as the sound keeps changing. If it got stuck on the exact same noise, that wasn't a good thing either.. But as long as it wasn't silent, you might still just leave it for the night..

@a1ba @stux And now most don't even have beep-boops anymore, making it a pain to debug POST issues… (and of course no serial/UART port either)

@lanodan @stux @a1ba Recently built a new PC in an old case with non-windowed side panels. I find the lack of 7-segment displays for debug POST info very infuriating. The 4 LEDs MSI boards aren't usually enough. No header for a PC speaker on the motherboard either.
