"Listen. We don't really talk about immigration. Or when we do it's one of two things: hate (no good) or platitudes about oh how they came to the rocky shore. Whatever. I'm not going to do either I want to talk about two things: good jobs and good neighborhoods. 1/

Republicans love to say that immigrants will take your job. But our economy, the American economy is *big.* So, that isn't how it works what really happens is the wages are depressed. You have these people scared of ICE, scared to ask for a raise and that's bad for them but it's also bad for everyone working a similar job. Your boss might love this. If people want to come here it can't be in the shadows. 2/

Every time anyone has tried to make some legislation so that the millions of undocumented immigrants can go through a process, go through some screening and over the course of years become citizens the republicans lose their minds because that would shut down the shadow labor market that keeps all kinds wages low. And that brings me to good neighborhoods. A good neighborhood is a place where people want to stay. 3/

A good neighborhood is a place where people settle down and raise their family. Where you know your neighbors and you can trust them. But you can't do that if you keep shutting people out."4/4See? It's not that hard.

@futurebird There was a time when democrats had the whole government by majority. They could have fixed the LEGAL process then, but they didn't.Even later, when there was bipartisan interest in reforming the system, they killed it because they wanted "free lawyers" for everyone who crossed the border. (Lawyers are the biggest Dem donors). At no time did they want LEGAL immigration, still don't.

@futurebird Wages are depressed by constantly expanding the labor force.Of course, this was in response to the damage done by unions, taxes, affirmative action, and regulations.

@magicalthinking Some democrats love the shadow labor market too. I think we should talk about it because the reasons working class Americans aren't in love with immigration aren't just about racism. (though that's a factor that's exploited) there is a material reason and until it's addressed the Republicans win on this one.

Some of ya'll might need to pay your maids more but I really don't care about that. The whole thing is just to have a labor supply that can't form a union or complain. It's obvious.

@futurebird At this point none of it matters.Democrats only position is the extremist, opposite of Trump, whatever it is.They will assault ICE officers, siege federal facilities, burn down dealerships. It's an unhinged ideology I cannot understand why anyone would be a part of it.Indeed, their latest gambit is to hold protests against armed ICE officers so that a protester is killed and they can do the George Floyd play.

@futurebird Something like this might work for a politician, who knows. But it's that people find it "too complex [to] understand." America is society consumed by hate, it always has been, it always will be. We have concentration camps because Americans have always liked concentration camps.

@futurebird The conspicuous absence of any attempt to penalize employers for the hiring or mistreatment of undocumented workers tells you everything you need to know. The cognitive dissonance of lauding employers as "job creators" who are then somehow powerless against the "theft" of jobs would be laughable if it weren't do actively harmful

@futurebird @magicalthinking My feeling when I lived there was that basically everybody was quite keen on the shadow labour market, as it was, ultimately, a handy way to ensure plentiful labour that was completely at the mercy of employers large and small, but actually saying that was a little taboo. Unfortunately, it seems that kicking the can down the road until Nazis got into power was probably not the right approach.

@AlexanderVI @magicalthinking It's very taboo and it's why when Democrats try to talk about how "immigration has made this country great*" it doesn't really land with working-class voters. Great for whom?*This is broadly true. But as I've been saying the impact on labor isn't something that politicians speak about directly enough.

@restlesshead @futurebird This is a common talking point but is literally false. This page summarizes the rules against hiring undocumented immigrants:https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/legal-requirements-and-enforcement/penaltiesTable 3 of this document (linked from the above) lists the actual penalties.https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2019-04-05/pdf/2019-06745.pdf1/

@restlesshead @futurebird You can argue that, e.g., the loopholes are too big, the enforcement is too lax, and/or the penalties are too low. But don't claim that there are no penalties for any employers in any situations. And if you do so, please bring receipts.

@david42 @restlesshead I think the point is that you do not see "employers" being chased off the edge of a building or put in a cage in the everglades to be eaten by mosquitos.

@futurebird @restlesshead Absolutely. And it's nearly unheard of to revoke a corporation's charter for malfeasance. Bankruptcy, sure, but criminal behavior? Nah.

@futurebird It’s weird to think that an Immigration law passed under Reagan in 1986 addressed many of the issues you mention.“Nearly three million people applied for legalization under the IRCA.[1] Through the update in the registry date along with the LAW and SAW programs enacted by IRCA, approximately 2.7 million people were ultimately approved for permanent residence.”https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration_Reform_and_Control_Act_of_1986

@magicalthinking @AlexanderVI It's not good for any country to have a large number of people who live and work there long term, pay taxes but who don't help to run the government. Normally there is a period of years where either you can't stay or you naturalize. The problem in the US is some people want the labor, but don't want new citizens. And this harms working class citizens.

@CowboyWho @futurebird @magicalthinking @AlexanderVI Wrong war. That war was fought to ensure the status (including freedom from taxation) of an incumbent aristocracy. (Who were seriously annoyed the home country aristos wouldn't view them as equals.)The war as got fought about this was the failed attempt to abolish slavery.
