       if you want to know why the cardboard tube is important, many early high explosives and semi-high explosives like Ammonpulver, reacted badly with metal casings and would spontaneously ignite or explode after forming dangerous, touch-sensitive molecules during prolonged storage

       @Selinica The Austro-Hungarian chemical industry was not prepared for war.Look up Ammonpulver, a mix of charcoal and ammonium nitrate that eats brass and turns it into crumbs after a few weeks, so shells made with it had to be fired right away.Or Ekrasit, which is nitrated coal tar with ammonium salts and a random mix of ammoniums with nitrocresols and nitrophenols with picric acid. Picric acid when stored in metal forms shock sensitive picrates.
