Intense #fire behavior was reported in 10 states across the western #US over recent days. The largest & most active fires, all sparked by lightning, include:
#Arizona’s #WhiteSageFire has burned 50k acres near the Grand Canyon’s northern rim, much of it over the weekend during extreme fire conditions, causing 500 visitors to be evacuated. Nearby to the south, the #DragonBravoFire has burned ~5k acres & dozens of structures at the #GrandCanyon.

The Fairbanks area has been surrounded by 5 blazes greater than 10k acres over the past few weeks. Many days of poor #AirQuality — as bad as #hazardous — resulted from #smoke-filled skies.
As in the Lower 48, most of the large fires are caused by lightning as warmer-than-average conditions overtook the state & brought summertime conditions along. A new #emergency declaration was issuedfor #Manitoba late last week as 13k people remain evacuated across east-central portions of the province, near the border with #Ontario, acc/to local reports.
In neighboring #Saskatchewan, a fast-moving fire surrounded the village of #Beauval on Sunday. It was one of dozens of #wildfires burning in the province.

With at least 13.8 million acres burned, this is Canada’s 4th-worst fire season in the modern record, having surpassed 2024’s 5.3 million acres. Over the past 3 years, about 70 million acres have been scorched, by far the most on record in a 3-year span.
2 years ago, the 2023 #wildfire season was Canada’s worst on record with 42.9 million acres blackened.
