i just got a craving for salad bar salad. specifically pizza hut buffet salad bar. i just want to eat memories from when life was good and all my people were still alive and i couldnt even spell axiety. they say smell is the sense most closely tied to your memories and smells can activate parts of your mind inaccessible otherwise.

@zerosum I crave that too. Stuffed crust was complete heaven as a kid and I disappointed we didn’t go more oftenfor me my nostalgic smell trigger is this soccer ball in my parent’s garage. sounds dumb but that specific musty scent takes me back to age 5 sitting in the grass at a game where my older brother was playing. just complete childhood innocence. I mustve smelled that ball a lot for all those memories to be tightly packed in there and vividly released for only a second.

@zerosum @suquili every single time I smell tobacco I remember a relative who died 20 years ago. his nasty-ass cancer sticks are permanently etched into my nasal memories.

@zerosum That's the worse part of getting older. Most of mine are dead as well.

@noyoushutthefuckupdad @zerosum Same. My grandpa was a smoker. He had to stop by the time I was 7 or so. But the faint smell of it in the distance is classic to me. I like how it smells from afar but when a house or car has been totally seeped in it it's awful. My brother would smoke in his cloth-interior car every day and one time I got in there and wanted to gag lol

@suquili @zerosum I've found that even smokers hate the smell of smoke-encrusted clothes, cars, houses, etc.

@noyoushutthefuckupdad @zerosum Not surprising. I wonder what it'd be like to live 100 years ago when everything smelled like smoke.

@noyoushutthefuckupdad Only now that it's not everywhere. You know how when you're making a pot of spaghetti sauce and you are in the house all day, you don't notice, but you go out to the garage for something and walk back in and it hits you like a wonderful Italian club of sublime perfection? For smokers it's the opposite but when smoking was everywhere, they only got a respite briefly when out in the country away from the towns where even if they weren't actively smoking, everyone else probably was.Increasing their transitions from smoke area to non-smoke area has helped them understand how gross that shit is.@suquili @zerosum

when we used wood for heat and cooking and food preservation everyone walked around smelling like a chimney. thats why spring cleaning and wash day were such big deals.

@zerosum Spring Cleaning is a big deal because it prevents hoarding and infestation if you have to go through the same shit you never use every year. Not just because of smoke. If you have a linen closet and a blanket doesn't move in a decade there's a good chance something has taken up residence. Even today.@suquili @noyoushutthefuckupdad
