Might be poking a hornets nest but having seen a few of these takes I gotta inform...AFAIK this is not a Mastodon "win". This is a UK law that all sites serving the UK (including your Mastodon host) need to follow. It only applies to UK users and is a requirement for serving adult content. UK folks can stay on bsky anonymously and adult content will be filtered out (and DMs are disabled?).Yes, the law sucks, but Bluesky is only following it. Mastodon hosts may need to do the same too.

@mdiluz@mastodon.gamedev.place tbh I've seen arguments that Mastodon might qualify for the "electronic mail" carve-out in the law.Though it will certainly depend on how the regulator actually acts, there hasn't been much clarity on that.

Yup it's insane, and grossly unenforceable. Idk what our government is thinking really. It's also likely most masto hosts will just ignore it, especially those hosted outside of the UK, so maybe you'll get lucky!I'm just not here for silly social media wars when the real problem is dumb governments "protecting the kids" from seeing some nipples. God forbid.

Also FWIW our regulator has listed the possible methods for making a decent guess at age and some can be implemented in privacy focused ways - e.g. a privacy focused third party could vouch for age to a site without giving the site any personal details. Or a site could implement on-device facial age checks. Yes, apparently just checking a face could be enough.https://www.ofcom.org.uk/online-safety/protecting-children/age-checks-for-online-safety--what-you-need-to-know-as-a-user
