In every forest there is an oldest tree. Perhaps it stands out: towering and strong. Perhaps it is nondescript, gnarled. A survivor. Perhaps it is identical to the tree next to it. They stand in rows planted for lumber. This honor of being the oldest, a technicality.Perhaps the whole forest is, on closer inspection, really one network, a single tree whose branches pose as individual trunks. But in every forest the oldest tree exists. Even if you cannot recognize it.

No one needs your permission to exist. You need the permission of no one to exist. Each living thing imposes a little order on the world, we are anchored by our "oldest tree" --and if it is struck down there is another and another and another forever. A scrap of living root in chaos left by clear cutting and fire or a stout behemoth of an ancient tree that announced its age as it rises from the rocks and moss. Living systems are more resilient than the violence that tears at our fringes.

I don't need to explain to anyone who I am or why I am here. In reality I would love to tell you all about myself, but this is just a courtesy. I will remain even if you put up a little sign saying I do not exist.

@futurebird a humanized version of PKD's "Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesnโ€™t go away."Nice.

@futurebird well well well, unfortunately in some forests all trees of a given plot (hoping it's the good translation for the french "parcelle") have the same age...

@HydrePrever There is still an oldest tree. Even if only by days or moments.

@futurebird when is a tree born? When the first leave pops out of the soil? Or a few days before before, when the germ starts to grow?

@HydrePrever When the number of cells in the seed increases, that is, when growth begins from the seed-stage.

@futurebird @HydrePreverAh, of course.I was thinking trees planted by a machine that puts let's say five trees in the ground at the exact same time, but you're right, they are already weeks, if not months old by that time.

@futurebird I liked your post here, made me think. And I also remembered the short film The Box, about the youngest tree in the field. With the risk of being slightly off-topic, here is the link: https://youtu.be/gNVqRC4mcSI?si

@futurebird All persons will at one time have been the most recently born and will also one time be the next to die. By the same logic.

@leeloo @futurebird @HydrePrever But what if an entire parcel is planned with trees made from cuttings originating from ultimately the same tree? Are they all individual trees even, or one organism? And is they are individual trees, which one is oldest? The one planted first, the one cut from the mother tree first?

@MennoWolff @futurebird @HydrePreverWe just concluded that putting them in the ground doesn't matter. If you cut the mother tree to firewood, you wouldn't count that as a stack of individual trees, so cutting can't be the answer either. Thus it must be when they start growing on their own - unless you count them as one big tree (I think most people wouldn't, as they are not connected).

@leeloo @MennoWolff @HydrePrever Maybe they are separate trees, but their true age starts from when the tree they were cut from started germinating?

@futurebird I write this in the middle of an aspen forest where each tree is a shoot from the roots of another. Pieces grow and thrive and die but the entire forest is still one tree, living for centuries and crawling across the landscape in search of whatever forests search for through the seas of modernity.

@ben @futurebird The forest is really a single being made up of roots and fungi that lives under the ground. The individual trees and tree trunks that we see are just the fruiting bodies. It's really rather like a higher class of mushroom. I certainly hope that we are not TOO much like that!
