Ok, just tought of something, you can use #amazon #aws #S3 storage for your instance (#mastodon / #lemmy / any fedisoft) .#S3 cahrge you for outgoing traffic above 100GB per month .Meaning, you can bankrupt instances who're using S3 by uploading an heavy media and downloading it repeatedly if cost control isn't enabled .

@shalien why are we still relying on these companies? Why use s3 at all? There are cheaper, greener, and more resilient alternatives right? Please correct me if I'm wrongLike infomaniak for example ?

@lexoyo Good question, I don't run those instances so I can't answer that ;D I would say a mix between habits and a way to start little and grow while keep the costs in check.I choose to get a 1TB server and that's the limit, if the instance data grows over it, old data will be erased and that's all.Regarding alternatives, cheaper. Yes. Greener ? Computer science never has been and never will be green. Ore, logisitics, energy everything about a computer/server/smartphone is indebting us to mother Earth. the least we can do is maintaining, caring , recycling and upcycling those hardware as long as we can. Regarding infomaniak (Coucou les suisses 🇨🇭 ) , like Proton I think they have good idea, goood ethics (yes I know for the proton scandal, i mean used to in their case), but I never find their services appealing. Mainly because I like to toy around and self host.

@shalien yeah i know :-/S3 apparently runs on fossil energy... That's just too much for me I guess 😅Anyway great info about the instances and s3 "vulnerability", thank you for sharing !
