This is one of the better bits of raw tornado footage I've seen this year. Just incredible how they concentrate power and motion in one place while the air is seemingly calm nearby. This one has layers that give you a sense of the internal structure of the vortex!I don't understand how "storm chasers" do this. I would simply leave. Though in this one the storm chasers are being chased by the storm it eats up telephone poles behind them. It's terrifying.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFNE68xlf04

@futurebird Imagine, though, if you could get those "I escaped danger" endorphins from avoiding the danger entirely in the first place.

Tornados are on a short list of things that are more impressive and terrifying in real footage than they ever seem in movies.

@futurebird It’s amazing how, about 15 minutes in, they see the tornado hit a house and then drop their storm chasing activities to turn it into a search-and-rescue of potential occupants of the home.

@futurebird I haven't seen one in person since I was 5 years old, a long long time ago. And it's one of the very few childhood memories that is still as vivid now as something that happened a week ago. You don't forget.

@futurebird This absolutely stressed me out. That was intense.Simultaneously beautiful and horrifying. When they showed the top of the funnel when they were almost right underneath it. Wow.Great footage.Glad there was no loss of life.

@futurebird Yeah I saw one of these vids, and the commentator was like, "You might not be getting a sense of the scale of this thing. You see those dots flying out? Those are cars!".Wait what, those are CARS?! Then why aren't you driving away as fast as you can?! 😱

@futurebird I worked at a radio station out west and rode in a Rambler station wagon with the news lady as she tried to chase down a tornado and talk on a two way radio over the air at the same time down back dirt roads. We eventually got a flat tire and had to give up the chase. I was OK with that.

@futurebird I lived in Oklahoma for a few years, and there was a healthy population of storm chasers there.IMO storm chasers are a personality mix of adrenaline junkies, weather nerds, and snake handlers. They knew so much about the mechanics of tornado formation, but they tried to get as close as possible to the beast without being bitten, while being constantly aware of the network local rural roads that ensured a path of escape. So wild.

@jerzone :(When you turn out the lights bees drop to the ground ... this is an instinct to avoid storms. https://www.independent.co.uk/tv/climate/bees-immediately-plummet-to-ground-when-lights-turn-off-b2180439.htmlI hope the bird could do something similar

@futurebird Earthquakes. You can't capture them on film unless things are falling all over the place. But they are terrifying no matter where you are, if they are strong enough.

@futurebird Absolutely wild. I've seen a few irl, not this close (except once, but it was smaller) nor from chasing, but haven't seen one on the ground for so long. That ribbony slo-mo wobble it did was incredible. Glad the chasers stopped to assist ppl when they saw the need.I wonder, do tornadoes confer *any* ecological benefit? They are a beautiful phenomenon in their way, but it seems to be all downside and no upside with them. They're like insensate apex predators upon the land. wtf 🌪️

@ColesStreetPothole It's like it decided to give up on "violence" and try "seduction" for a bit!Oddly this is faaar from the most "ropey" tornado I've seen video of... they can do a "loop de loop"
