people need to understand that the FSF being not infallible doesn't mean it's not relevant

@kitten I feel like "not infallible" is a bit of an understatement for how bad it has gotten

@novenary @kitten[[[ To any NSA and FBI agents reading my email: please consider ]]] [[[ whether defending the US Constitution against all enemies, ]]] [[[ foreign or domestic, requires you to follow Snowden’s example. ]]]He literally did immeasurable damage and I would say that calling it fatal is understating it.He did essentially nothing for the project past a certain point except sabotaging progress, acting like an incompetent authoritarian, and ensuring that everyone that was working on anything he was adjacent to left or distanced themselves as much as possible. And he did all of this while having the most absurd and regressive views on things, mainly because he wants to protect the actions of fellow rich MIT professors and other people that aren’t really part of the Free Software Movement.I mean heck, I may have been a Guix contributor now if it wasn’t for how cringe the FSF has acted over the years. Very hard to redeem them.I don’t think anyone that seriously cares about software freedom can look at an organization like FSF and determine they’re a good thing for us. Even before they lost the goodwill with the Linux kernel…

@kitten @novenary okay right, the fsf is actually good because the person in charge of day to day operations (not the president Geoffrey) is a woman, right. Compelling argument. Wanna see all the projects that use the AGPLv3 in a way that are indefensible? Or do you perhaps have a GPLv3 Linux Kernel in your sleeve? And while you’re at it, a Guix project? Or reestablishing relationships with redhat? Or maybe, any relevant action that wasn’t just producing marketing material and hoarding gnu licenses? Maybe having a woman now means that actually that time they removed RMS without asking members to appease the public, then added him back without asking anyone AGAIN was just something I dreamed up because the executive director (not the president) is a woman. Actually you know, the FSFs stance on firmware now makes a lot more sense, I never realized that A WOMAN was the executive director. Ohh right, why did zoey even come on? Who was she replacing… why was she replacing someone… https://itwire.com/business-it-news/open-source/fsf-executive-director-steps-down-amid-row-over-stallman.html#:~:text=John%20Sullivan:%20%22It%27s%20been%20a%20humbling%20honour%20to%20serve%20this&text=Richard%20Stallman%2C%20back%20on%20to%20the%20board.I’m feeling like… so owned right now.

@cafkafk @kitten or more recently dunking on anubis (which, yeah fair enough anubis is far from perfect but it is still 100% victim blaming)is the FSF still capable of doing its job? maybebut even looking at surface-level facts they haven't been the only major free software advocacy non-profit for a long time, but they are the only one that's constantly adding to their own reputational damage without doing anything substantial to recover from itas things stand, there are no compelling reasons to put the FSF on a pedestal and support them over SFC or FSFE or literally any other org

@novenary @kitten The AGPLv3 is an unenforcable rubber stamp at this point that’s mostly used by VC capitalism, I’d go as far as saying they’ve diluted the movement and caused active harm for that alone, and all of their missteps is also why we call it “open source” now and not “free software”. Totally dropped the ball.

@novenary @cafkafk i think the problems with anubis and similar software are at least something to consider even tho I disagree with the FSF conclusion. i mean anubis is obviously is completely horrible but ig still the lesser evil over letting in AI scrapersoh and the FSFE is cool too i support both of them

@kitten @cafkafk we are in agreement here, they definitely have a point, but the delivery was *ass* and that's unfortunately a pattern with the fsf
