       if the point of social media was just to talk to others, we have many other ways to do that. if it was to post publicly, we have blogs etc. and we can message people links to sites with a note, then talk about it.what's special is the virality. and making it decentralized means no third party has final say on that virality. the public decides what's popular. what needs to be seen.it's the power of mass media but put in the control of the public. revolutionary.#DemocracyOfReach #SocialWeb

       @wjmaggos I am not in favor of PageRank style stuff, generally, but what makes mainstream social media powerful is the virality you mention.

       @amerika if somebody I follow boosts it, I should see it. if everybody else in the world does but nobody I follow, I shouldn't.the algo doesn't work that way. it decides for us, taking the place of the people we follow. which also means that in our limited time browsing the feed, we see something in put in front of us instead of something from somebody we follow.and it can always be hijacked.

       @wjmaggos I think at this point there's too much traffic not to have an algo.We get away with it here by being small.We need a public square discourse where things get voted up.It's superior to Reddit because there is no downvote.Sort of like Slashdot.

       @wjmaggos Those that own the media control the propaganda. The large companies do not control the Fediverse and they will likely do anything to kill it.
