There's a limit to how much we can pretend that those running a service or server can just absorb the cost of running or creating something (or needing to eat the cost of expanding to meet demand).The goal shouldn't be pretending monetization isn't necessary, but to create a way of monetizing unobtrusively that supports the hosts and creators as directly and fairly as possible without runaway capitalistic incentives.
