Lovely people.. ❤️ There is nothing I would love to do more then self-host every instance I host from home with nice beefy servers..The issue is.. Beefy servers costs a LOT of money. The new dedicated server we now got has over 10K EUR in SSD drives aloneThere is no way I can affort that so "take control and host yourself" is not gonna work with a relative large server like mstdnA simple laptop is not gonna cut it anymore

@stux What kind of hardware do you consider "beefy server"?I got myself an old server (pizza box style) for cheap (~60 duckerous).Though it isn't what I call beefy, but it's kitted out niceley.

@stux Mstdn is a big server, why would anyone expect you to host it at home yourself? Mastodon also isn't the most lightweight microblogging server to boot (at least it wasn't the last time I checked it).

@TagHunt @stux keep in mind that mstdn hosts 25k active users. This isn't something that cheap hardware can handle.

@kaito02 @stux I just checked and it looks like mstdn.social hosts ~263.2k users total with ~13k monthly users. With the current specs (from the about page) it mostly depends on which specific CPU I got in mine and which DDR version stux/hetzner is using.I agree that that I got isn't up to snuff and I have no clue how much CPU it takes. But I'm kinda curious how it would hold up.My point is, 2nd hand servers can go crazy cheap.

@TagHunt @kaito02 We need at least a few dozen CPU but also import is the storage, the database is quite large and needs to be stored on fast drives. With the previous migration I ran into read/write issues
