If you list a job and no one qualified shows up you need to offer more money. This is considered an outrageous 'entitled snowflake' opinion on boomertard boards. Why, a lad with moxie and gumption would offer to do it for free for a decade just to PROVE THEMSELVES WORTHY!

@Akagi Also that the academic and non-profit H-1Bs impact for-profit wages where similar skills and qualifications are required. Without those scabs all sectors would have to bid up wages to attract qualified people.

@Akagi @judgedread Oh no! A shortage of labor at the current price! If only the Free Market had a solution for this totally unique and unprecedented problem of a shortage of some input.

@judgedread "the millionaire next door" was published almost three decades ago (1996)the equivalent of $1,000,000 in 1996 dollars would be a minimum of two million today by official numbers. eight million if you use the spot price of gold as an index

@TrevorGoodchild 'imputed deflators'AKA my Windows machine is $500, MS-DOS machine was $4000, therefore we need to apply that savings to the inflation rate.Because your PC is comparable to food, rent and insurance.

@TrevorGoodchild @judgedread on some level things are either fungible or they aren't.The question is just "how do we determine if things are fungible" - which of course is a deceptively difficult question.

@judgedread People are used to resources continually becoming more abundant and cheaper. Most Malthusian predictions fail to manifest. This same expectation often carries over to labor. Those with the boomer mindset expect the cost of labor to keep going down (or at worst, remain steady) just like the cost of corn or cotton. An uptick in the cost of labor must be, to them, the fault of some unnatural economic condition, perhaps some bad government policy, or some other bad actor. The labor equivalent of price gouging. The idea that there is an actual person on the other end of that transaction, a fellow countryman, a co-ethnic, someone trying to raise a family, never enters their head. If general purpose robots become economically viable, the boomers will realize one of their fondest dreams; infinite, reliable, inhuman, no complaining, low cost labor. Workers you can literally work to death, on the cheap.

@Charles_in_Charge Mostly the boomers just underestimate inflation so they think $20 an hour is an outrageously high wage.

Read the wonderful story Jack London tells of how he damaged his wrists for life working for the cable car company in San Francisco as a furnace stoker. The older men clued him in that he was hired at half the pay of the man he replaced and was doing twice the work everyone else was doing.London then realized that he was being used and no matter how hard he worked he wasn't going to rise in the company and eventually marry the bosses' daughter. They would keep him at his job until he crippled himself. Then he'd be tossed out and replaced by another naive kid.Life wasn't like it is in the cheap penny boy's magazines.
