@halva @usernameswift i think germany is somewhat crippled by the statuatory insurance system where you have to have healh insurance but its still with a private company (subject to a lot of regulations tho) which has different services and rates (within a certain range). ah and if you dont have any money the government pays for your health insurance.so its not like i need to be scared of calling an ambulance when im hurt but theres still interest groups that lobby against less restrictive practices and so on which sucks. in spain it's single payer and much better tbh

@kitten @halva The German health insurance structure is weird to meHere there's a single-payer system that covers a fair bit and then private insurance for more expensive/less "necessary" services or medicationsBut thankfully those medications that aren't covered aren't expensive without private insurance

@halva @usernameswift tbf i think its not even necessarily wrong to treat hormone therapy in general as a last resort or whatever bcs like hormones can fuck with your brain and shit. like especially when we're talking about menopause or stuff like that you dont necessarily want to be on that medication for the rest of your life so if other things help to mitigate the problems that's greatits just that for trans people there isn't really anything else that would give the desired effect and it has also been shown that it's incredibly important for mental wellbeingADHD meds which also fuck with hormones are also quite a bombshell i am on them because i wouldn't function without but they also change your entire personality and perception and tbh days without work are far more fun off meds

@kitten @halva Yeah I've noticed that ADHD meds make a huge difference when it comes to personalityI have a few friends on them and the difference is night and dayMy SSRIs on the other hand just make me hot and miserable half the time but it's better than being paranoid and suicidal so I'll take it

@usernameswift @halva @kitten I asked my doctor for it and he connected me with the hospital's HRT specialist, who prescribed me cypro after I took a blood test. Then I was on that for five weeks (I doubled the dose without asking after week 4 because it wasn't working, not sure if this changed the timeline), then he prescribed me estrogen. It would have probably taken, like, two weeks (at most) to get cypro if I didn't complicate things by being in Quebec for two months.

@mikelovesbikes @usernameswift @halva > because it wasn't workingthat's ... because cypro doesn't transition you, on itself it only blocks the T and makes you depressed in the process because humans need a sex hormone to function properlythe concept of prescribing cypro to a trans person without prescribing E is insane to me tbh

@kitten @halva @usernameswift I know. It wasn't blocking any T. I took another blood test right before doubling my dose and it confirmed this.Yeah IDK, I raised that concern too and he said this is what he always does. Which doesn't surprise me because it was such a low dose (12.5 mg every second day) that I doubt it's given any of his previous patients depression.

@mikelovesbikes @kitten @halva @usernameswift that isn't even a particularly low dose of cypro. Cypro is pretty effective (at least when combined with estrogen) even at this dose. My dose of it is 5mg every day.

@halva @usernameswift @kitten Not even. It wasn't doing *anything*. I still wonder why he prescribes that amount. Hopefully I was the patient that finally convinced him it doesn't work.

@LunaDragofelis @halva @usernameswift @kitten Really? Huh. Every DIY HRT site I looked at recommended starting at 12.5 every day, and that is what's working for me. I suppose the key word is "when combined with estrogen".

@LunaDragofelis @mikelovesbikes @halva @usernameswift people who are prescribed T blockers due to testicular cancer are usually given 100mg per day, which is what you need to actually effectively block all of itbut estrogen is already very good at blocking T on its own, iirc the only reason cypro is even necessary is because E levels are too low in what they give you.monotherapy with a high E dose and no blockers is actually the safest (no brain cancer etc) and most effective option iirc but also i think only doable using DIY injections at this point which makes it far less attractive for me, so im sticking with the prescribed E gel + 25mg cypro every other day (it used to be 10mg but there's supply issues for the 10mg pills). my blood test levels are flawless and the effects are showing so i'm not really worried about it for now
