Streaming was a good ideaWhen there was 1 or maybe 2 platforms where you could watch almost anything for under 20 bucks a monthStreaming is terrible nowA dozen platforms with media spread everywhere each charging 15 to 20 bucks a monthLike with many good ideas, they overplayed their hand and lost meI am hosting my "own" media again :nkoShrug:

@stux you know this, but the issue isn't that media is spread everywhere, but that it *isn't* - this thing is available on those two, that other one on completely separate other three, while this one is an exclusive on that one over there.

@stux years back, cable TV did the same thing. we wound up with single provider packages at a substantial (though still pricey) discount from having all the separate channels. streamers that all want to "own" the customer are going to find out the same lesson the hard way but we consumers are going to get screwed for a while longer before they finally concede, i'll bet.

@stux i currently pay for 1 streaming service and YT Premium. The only one I will keep is YT because I mostly watch on my TV. But I've never stopped "hosting my own media" because it's never been easy to have access to what I wanted to watch.

@stux same, dude. I had one, then two, then three, then they started putting the prices up. $5.99/mo, then $8.99/mo, then, finally, each was over $20/mo.I'd rather sail the digital seas

@stux we only pay for the Disney+/Hulu/HBO Max ad free bundle and only because of a credit that makes it $10/m.Netflix, Peacock, AppleTV+ and Paramount+ are free via other stuff but we don’t want them (except AppleTV+) due to ads. Not going to pay for ads.

@stux imagine if music streaming only had the artists on certain labels. And you needed to pay for Spotify, Apple Music, YT Premium, and Tidal to listen to all your favorite songs.

@stux your free library offers some streaming, not likely the latest but .. no extra charge I have succumbed to one with adsBetween that and the free options, I really dislike how much time can be spent looking and often return to the networks. They have a schedule I can browse

@stux it’s almost as if the underlying delivery method isn’t the problem, but rather the companies who buy up and control it.I know, I know, I’m a wacky conspiracy theory nut!

@stux I wouldn't even know where to find it all now. I have a $10/mo budget for streaming services total. When I get tired of one I cancel and subscribe to another. There are a ton of free channels on my projector (it has android/google tv, roku, etc). I could never possibly watch it all.

@stux Right now I pay nothing for streaming. I watch whatever I can see for free on my Roku. Honestly, I've found some interesting stuff I never would have seen otherwise. My new hobby is scouring the DVD sections at thrift stores. I have a pretty good collection now. Plus, I can take them camping and watch them on my laptop in my little trailer if it rains all day.

@stux It's why I stopped pirating games many years ago. Everything I need I get from Steam and sometimes GOG because I feel like supporting DRM free platform and game studios who release there. I only use EA App for Need for Speed and Epic for the free shit hehe. Don't like prices on Steam, I grab stuff from CDKEYS. Music streaming is dog shit and video streaming is even worse. I only use Netflix coz I get it cheaper with my ISP and local service coz it's free by my ISP. And that's it.

@stux If only the bros in charge had just been warned that greed would drive people back to piracy.IF ONLY.Narrator: countless tech journalists warned them in print for years, but the bros believed that natural laws did not apply to them. So they crashed their own enterprises seeking infinite growth in revenue.
