Wanting to live in the end times is kind of cowardly since it absolves of you of the burden of building a better future. Some great compelling force will come down from on hight and sort it all out. Since you don't really know what times you face it's more responsible and brave to live as if these are the "Beginning Times" instead. And with great effort you may do a tiny bit of good that lasts a few decades beyond your grave.

@futurebird I'm a Christian (pre-mil) but I agree to an extent. I can't fully agree with post-mil Christians but they make a good point similar to yours, regarding the pre-mil/dispensationalist Christians, and anyone else who wants to live in end times. The way I view it is this: I work toward a better future (like a post-mil) while resting in the hope that God's got it either way (like a pre-mil). It's a good balance to have.

@futurebird Seems to me that anyone who *wants* to live in the end times hasn't read the Bible very carefully.Interestingly, there were in Bible times people who gave up on earning a living because they were so certain the world was going to end pronto. The Bible makes it clear that such behaviour was not to be enabled by others. "If anyone won't work, don't let them eat."Jesus' followers are meant to be blessings to the world around them, not parasites.

@futurebird There is a similar sentiment in veganism. Save the animals. Save your health. Save the planet. Do your bit to live a long healthy life (body and mind) and try to leave the planet and its animals in a better place than how you found it. No one else can do it for you. Be responsible. Be brave. Go vegan. ✌

@futurebird this is the message I try to get across to some of my religious family members. They are loving caring people but often take a defeated attitude to “world problems” that are too great for them to do anything about. They relegate it to being a sign of the end times, that will not matter when Jesus returns and therefore we cannot do anything about it except pray. Democratize the solution, do not fall into despair, and take ownership of our collective future!

@futurebird I'm quite often accused of being a "doom monger" on social media, principally because I spell out the extreme precariousness of our current situation as a species. I believe our situation to be far, far worse than the "man on the street" apprehends, especially vis-a-vis environmental and ecological breakdown.I would personally rather people had a more accurate grasp of where we're at regarding these issues, and the fascism and authoritarianism they are giving rise to, rather than naively hoping that things will turn out for the best somehow.I absolutely do not want "to live in the end times", but it's where we are, like it or not, and the sooner we acknowledge and accept the direness of our predicament the better things will be for all of us

@futurebird I am pretty sure we are experiencing the beginning of the end of the Industrial Age, and its downfall will be horrible. No divine power will come to save us. We need to build the foundations of a new society while there's still some time left, before everything becomes too chaotic.

@LordCaramac "I am pretty sure we are experiencing the beginning of the end of the Industrial Age"I don't know about all that. We are accustom to growth and technological progress. It may slip back or stall. It may even simply fail to grow as fast as it has previously. But I don't think we're going back to a previous age, even if we fail to do our best to address challenges like the climate. No, what we do risk is that millions will die needlessly. And without them we will achieve less.

@futurebird I agree with you on the notion that we’re not going to lose our industrial capabilities but I don’t think “end of industrial age” necessarily means going back to a previous age. I understand it to mean going into a new age from the one that’s marked by industrialization. When we transition into the post-industrial age, whatever that looks like, it’s still a new age.

@LordCaramac We have created an interconnected world economy that requires billons of educated and skilled people to function correctly. What I feat most that that there are far too many who don't understand that we don't have any people to spare. We don't have any children we can afford to fail to educate or any communities that we can let fall to waste without the whole system shuddering and breaking in ways that may even reach the best insulated.

@futurebird I’m with you completely.I’m strictly speaking about the phrase “end of the industrial age”.To me it means we completed the transition from a non-industrial civilization to an industrial one. Now that we’re an industrial civilization, the next step is to do something significant that will shape our world, but other than industrialization.

We are animals, bipedal naked apes, we need food and clean water and a stable and not too hot climate, and we have damaged the biosphere in so many ways, we have destabilised so many planetary systems, not only the climate, I fear the planet won't support our numbers much longer. And who lives and who dies will be mostly random. I just hope all the rich people die.

@futurebird It's the urge to be out of the modern "rat race" and Back to the Farm. When those first 1980s nuclear apocalypse movies came out, most of the young audience had grown up with grandparents who were still on the farm, and it was this idyllic place on vacation. (I once asked MY parents where "The Farm" was, since every kid in class was going to "The Farm" that summer.)When nuclear apocalypse became very unlikely, we invented the Zombie Apocalypse to dream of No Rat Race.

@benroyce @dragonfrog @ralph058 @futurebird The airlines always remind parents to put their oxygen masks on first, before helping their children.Sometimes the (adult) "child" refuses to cooperate, and that decision should be respected. Those who do not wish to be rescued cannot be saved from their own stupidity.

@c_merriweather @dragonfrog @ralph058 @futurebird We do what we can. We extend all reasonable, practicable helpAnd that will not reach everyoneThat's just lifeOther people's irresponsibility is not our responsibility, and we're already demonstrating sterling altruism with our attempts to help, going as deep as we can before we hit those truly toxic veins of prideful ignorance and indecency out there

@futurebird The belief in life after death or resurrection or whatever is one of the most dangerous lies perpetrated by religion, because it makes people careless about what they do during their time on Earth. If everyone realized we get one shot at this and after that, there is absolutely nothing... maybe we'd take better care of our lives and the lives of others.
