We got a little bit of an issue.. Currently the main server for mstdn.social has just under 48GB disk space left and we cannot upgrade any further since we're at the highest tierSo the only solution would be a dedicated server with a lot more space to grow, within exactly 14 days bills will arrive for all our current servers but I also gotta rent and setup a new server in the meanwhileBesides that me and my gf are alsomoving soon maybe so i cannot spend all our money on server bills 😩[1/2]

[2/2]Currently I am looking with Hetzner for a dedicated server that fits out infrastructure, if you have a better tip, please let me know! Time is getting limitedIf you can, please think about helping us out this month, hopefully we can slash costs by a massive percentage and have room to gtow for the future ❤️ https://paypal.me/stuxOShttps://patreon.com/mstdn https://ko-fi.com/mstdnhttps://bunq.me/stuxhosthttps://stux.me/donatehttps://liberapay.com/mstdnI'm doing the best I can ❤️

**Is there someone who currently has a dedicated server via #Hetzner? I have tried using volumes for the database but unfort the read/write speed was too low so Mastodon did not function rightOur current database size is always 1TB

@stux I have a storage box from Hetzner, my read/write isn't terrible, but more suited for backups/storing data than running high-demand applications. Maybe netcup or OVH or some other provider will have faster storage? I also have a VPS with netcup, read/write speed there is very good.

@stux Hi,It might help you to look into moving towards object storage. Most blobs are saved in the postgres database, which is quite expensive and doesn't scale well. With object storage you don't have this issue anymore. Here are some how to's. Good luck.https://thomas-leister.de/en/mastodon-s3-media-storage/https://stanislas.blog/2018/05/moving-mastodon-media-files-to-wasabi-object-storage/

@thehole @stux I'm currently running this instance on Hetzner and they have object storage and mountable volumes. Since we have a tiny server, storage is also usually the bottleneck for us. They're reliable (for me) and have everything but disk capacity monitoring compared to Digital Ocean.

@stux What about Kimsufi and Soyoustart? Have you considered scaling the number of instances instead of the size of them?A few thoughts:- put the web servers separately on multiple CPU/RAM optimised instances. If there’s a redis for cache it can live there as well.- what is the read/write load on the DB? Would it make sense to spin up a couple reader instances and keep a single writer? Is that supported by mastodon?- tl;dr: where is the load coming from? Web or DB? Read or write?

@stux I use OVH for my instance, ~100usd/month for a bare metal server, way more capacity than needed. I hear Hetzner can be problematic sometimes. Either way I’d say bare metal is definitely the way to go.

@stux I dont have a dedicated one but let me tell you about something:Having the whole DB on the volume can lead to different issues like latency and not only speed. What you could try is to move only the big tables to volumes but having all small tables, index and cache locally. That could maybe fix the space issue while latency and speed dont matter that much that way

@stux Good luck!Hope it goes smootly.Only experience with servers with TransIP in The Netherlands, and Strato in Germany. The first very good, but probably some more cost. The latter I've been for shared hosting for over 10 years, but current packages are not as complete as the old packages, though mostly it's a give and take. But, based on stories with Hetzner they are not on my option list for anything.

@stuxWhile Hetzner is a better hosting provider in general, netcup has a very interesting option: you can rent additional dynamic network storage. It is easily accesible from servers hosted at netcup. You get a fixed price up to a certain amount of storage and if you exceed that storage you just pay a few cents per additional GB. As far as I can tell, there is no upper limit.I haven't worked with netcup for over a year though, so I'm not sure, if anything has changed in the meantime...
