@deprecated_ii the thing is in fringe parts of the internet like this you're going to get far more linux/nerd types because the normies using windows are happy in their Facebooks and Twitters.

@dorkvalized most people who can exist entirely in linux don't do any real work. the software I was just using on that windows machine is completely, totally, 100% unsupported on linux

@deprecated_ii @dorkvalized Eh it all depends, there are many who do real work and don't have to touch anything microsoft on the day to day but that happens more for those that do not work for corporate anything.Nowadays i would reccomend having a virtual machine for windows with all the data of the VM stored in a btrfs partition, much more reliable than dual booting since windows 10 started fucking up the boot partition and erasing grub on random updates, along with the random "windows updater will delete directories to download updates", things that willmake your life miserable trying to fix with a dual boot install but are a non issue for a VM and easy to roll back, then there's the great time when windows updates leaves the machine "stuck" for anything between 30 minutes to 5 hours when updating and you cannot even turn it off, on a virtual machine just leave the ms windows window in one workspace an move to a different one to continue working.

@deprecated_ii So… you want to remain an active Windows user, but also to not be reminded of Linux, when you post about Windows (complaining mostly), because using Linux to post here should work as some sort of excuse? 1623683811245265848_460x258 0:23.307–0:25.424 [LFL-2].webm

@deprecated_ii Eeh, even if your work software isn’t supported on Linux and can’t be launched with Wine, there are virtual machines. I mostly agree with EdBoat on this, except I wouldn’t recommend btrfs (it’s optimised, it’s fast – but may you never have to do data recovery from it), and cutting a partition is not really necessary, if only you want eksutora supido or heavy disk r/w. Passing the CPU through has been there for like 15 years already, and with passthrough now available for buses too, even OS-specific devices can work with a VM. It’s become so simple and fast, that ordinary people on YT make guides for complete dummies – and for things, that I would consider even unnecessary to run a VM for. Unless your machine is twenty years old or real weak, there’s no reason to deny yourself the comfort, having yourself seated on Linux, while keeping the Windows stuff in a VM. If, however, it’s die job, that puts you on a work PC with Windows… that’s sad. Though I wouldn’t be posting my complaints here, and instead directed them to higher-ups to share them in with the pain. If I wouldn’t receive my Linux eventually, I’d receive an increase to paycheck at least (real story on one of my former workplaces). And to get my complaints to anons on fedi would seem like I don’t know anything better, and of course this would draw a lot of snarky comments. [Beatrice-Raws] Sousou no Frieren 25 [BDRip 1920x1080 HEVC TrueHD] 00:07:01.129.jpg

@dorkvalized the point of my original post is I'm ALREADY using linux full time and have been for six years. I was dual booting for five years before that, and running linux servers even longerso guess how much I like hearing about how I need to switch to linux from people who probably weren't even born the first time I installed linux on a computer

@dorkvalized Trying to run everything on one machine is an extremely low quality experience for many reasons, and there's absolutely no reason to do it when I can buy a 5 year old chinkpad in excellent condition for $150I have four work machines: two linux laptops, a windows laptop, and a powerful windows desktopI will travel with two laptops before I go back to running two OSes on the same machine

@deprecated_ii It’s more about the state of mind, “peace at home”, rather than years of experience. Nobody has been denying you those. Please notice that. This probably won’t be a complete picture, but as personal is closer to most people, Linux users who are able to organise that comfort for themselves on their (single) desktop or on their primary battle station, tend to disregard the rest of the problems as trifle. There are, I suppose, people, for whom it is inverted, and who are more attached to their genba. If you belong to the latter type, there’s nothing that can be done to deal with situation (that is, what you wrote about in the OP). The only viable solution is isolation of both groups from each other. 3gf56h7k.jpg

@dorkvalized computers are tools. what I want out of my daily driver is not what I want out of my design box, or my simulation server, or my low power travel machinesI have dozens of specialized pairs of pliers as well. should I throw them all out and try to make do with a pair of cheap slip joints?

@deprecated_ii > computers are tools. Mm-hmm. Assuming it is so, doesn’t any professional aim to find and use the best tools? that, witch which work (or whatever else he does) goes smoothly, without any interruptions caused? If the master complains, either the tool is not a good one, or…> I have dozens of specialized pairs of pliers as well. should I throw them all out and try to make do with a pair of cheap slip joints?Something tells me, that you wouldn’t lend any of your machines to anyone, unlike how you might with pliers. Please don’t get angry. https://0x0.st/KB0e.cr.png I don’t want to say that you’re a bad workman, merely pointing out, that the “tools” argument backfires. At first I made a long post, describing pro and contra in detail, and there was an “if” clause, going like “if you changed your mind, don’t look under the spoiler”, but then I thought that the length might be scary and went for a shorter reply.#nsfw 1759167113.png
