@phoronix Thats a pity, I still have an openmoko, although I must confess that I cannot boot it up any more, probably because of a too old, broken, totally empty battery.

@jason123santa @phoronix No not any more. However I did already get some advice on how to try to fix that, but I did not try yet:https://social.librem.one/@dos/114582768185181900

@janvlug @phoronix Would like to hear if you get it working. Looks like a cool device from before linux on phones was a main thing.

my primary SMS-receiver is a freerunner. it was still easy to find compatible batteries for it last I looked for them. I got a couple of freerunners with an ancient install of the long-dead SHR, and somewhere in my mess hall there are a handful of brand new batteries for them. it's amazing how sturdy these devices have been, given the amount of abuse I've imposed on them,as in the Debconf 2019 presentation of the 0G project: https://www.fsfla.org/~lxoliva/#0G/ 🙂CC: @janvlug@mastodon.social @phoronix@masto.ai

I wish there was some way to forward SMS sent to +55 phone numbers to XMPP, email, whatever. a +1 won't do for the sort of stuff that requires me to keep an SMS receiver going. the freerunner would be just an GPS receiver with shopping lists otherwise 😉but hey, I can read my SMSs on the GNUbooted T400 computer by X forwarding over SSH, running GNU Emacs on the FreeRunner 🙂CC: @jason123santa@fosstodon.org @phoronix@masto.ai @janvlug@mastodon.social

@lxo @Suiseiseki @phoronix @janvlug Well there is jmp.chat to do phone numbers over xmpp. Or you can get any voip provider and login to a voip client on your laptop.

sure, I've even promoted jmp.chat myself, in my talk abut the 0G Project and elsewhere. the challenge is to get the voip provider that would take the +55 (Brazil) number I've been using for almost 30 years (desirable, not strictly needed). as I wrote upthread, unfortunately a foreign number won't do for some of the purposes that require me to receive SMS. do you have any useful recommendations of service providers that could do that? I used to have VoIP service at home some 15-20 years ago (without SMS), but the service was shut down when the provider was bought by the phone company, and I haven't found a replacement. the web is toxic and impenetrable to people like me who won't run alien JavaScript, which makes it hard to find all sorts of services, and they typically don't want me as a customer because their websites won't work for me, and I don't even have hardware to run their T.R.Apps. (and see above about autistic rigidity and PDA 🙂CC: @Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @phoronix@masto.ai @janvlug@mastodon.social
