Brits can sleep safely tonight, after the heroic work of the Metropolitan Police. The Reverend Sue Parfitt, 83, a retired priest, was arrested in Parliament Square for holding a sign which read:“I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.”Under British law, this now puts her in the same category as an ISIS or Al-Qaeda terrorist. The courts may impose a prison sentence of up to 14 years, to protect the public against the existential threat posed by this very dangerous woman.

@2legged @Remittancegirl You forgot some important context: Palestine Action is not some random action in Palestine, but a specific political group that attacked british military planes and was banned as a terrorist group, well, because they attacked british military planes for political reasons. So this is a publicity stunt by supporters of that group

@mschfr@mastodon.social @2legged@mastodon.ie @Remittancegirl@mstdn.social I thought terrorism requires attacks to be against civilians, and looking up the first definition I find is indeed "The practise of coercing governments to accede to political demands by committing violence on civilian targets; any similar use of violence to achieve goals."So, by definition, attacking a military base cannot be a terrorist action, and does not make them terrorists. The UK government is known to abuse their terrorism legislation to just do away with those they dislike, though.

@tyil @Remittancegirl @2legged It totally is a muddy field. Let's take an example not from the current middle east conflict: In 1985 german terror organisation RAF (who had no problems attacking civilians and politicians during other attacks) murdered a US soldier and used his ID to sneak a car bomb onto a US airbase, killing 2. It makes totally sense to see this as a terror attack, but the definition that civilians have to be targetted makes that difficulthttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhein-Main_Air_Base_bombing

@mschfr@mastodon.social @Remittancegirl@mstdn.social @2legged@mastodon.ie Its not muddy at all. Old woman holding a sign in public? Not a terrorist. Some guy walking into a military base and doing some damage? Also not a terrorist. Someone who murders a civilian for political reasons? A terrorist.Even in your example someone gets murdered, I didn't read anything about this old woman killing or even attempting to kill people in her quest for a political statement.

@tyil @Remittancegirl @2legged But I also do know that autocratic regimes are trying to label every opposition group as a terror group. And that there are violent uprisings that are labeled as terror by the gov and that it totally depends on your perspektive how you label e.g. the iraqi resistance.(but what I want to say: You really shouldn't complain if your group gets banned after you attack military bases in a time of political crisis for political reasons. That will happen everywhere)

Everybody knows the UK government will never label an actual terror group "terrorists". Doing so would be rude, insensitive, and frankly counterproductive to reaching a mutually beneficial peace agreement.

@mschfr@mastodon.social @Remittancegirl@mstdn.social @2legged@mastodon.ie You really shouldn't complain if your group gets bannedShouldn't you? Why shouldn't you oppose bad people abusing laws for their own gain? Is it just because The Government is always right? Do you even need a right to protest then? Should the government ban and incarcerate all muslims because their "group" has terrorists in them? Even the nice old ladies who have never hurt anyone, and have shown no signs to do so?

@tyil @Remittancegirl @2legged We are talking about a specific group with few members who did this attack on the airfield in the name of the group and not some bigger and undefined group like "all muslims".

@mschfr@mastodon.social @Remittancegirl@mstdn.social @2legged@mastodon.ie So at what size does a group become "too big" to be considered a terrorist organization?
