@arcana I have the source code for all the software on my GNUbooted router. The "starlink terminal" uses "OpenWRT", thus it is required that the users are provided the source code and installation information on the satellite terminal under the GPLv2 (although unfortunately not for aggregated proprietary programs that are not derivative works - only binaries for such, or a way to leave the binaries in place, but install an update to the GPLv2 software that executes). You should have received a written offer for such software - if you can't find one, "SpaceX" is infringing the GPLv2 and their license has been automatically terminated.Once partial source code for "starlink terminals" is available and if free replacements of the other proprietary software are written, it would be acceptable to use the starlink service, although there would still remain other problems like location spying.

@arcana >I imagine this is in the TOS or manual somewhere. That would not be GPLv2-compliant - the written offer must "Accompany" "the Program" - it may not be in a "ToS" or manual somewhere else.>Wouldn’t the dish be running proprietary software as well though?Yes, but once control over the GPLv2 software is achieved, then it becomes possible to replace the proprietary software.>Not to mention the satellites and the base stations. That isn't your hardware - those should run free software for the hosters sake, but it's not your concern (encryption and tor can be used to ensure that your internet browsing isn't spied on after all).>I will ask again, what would the alternative be though?GNU/Satellites placed into orbit. There is no need for another service if an existing service can be used with free software.

@arcana @Suiseiseki >I will ask again, what would the alternative be though?AX.25, but good luck getting firmware source code for your transceivers. And enjoy your 9600 baud / bits/s maximum. There is no real viable alternative.

@phnt @arcana AX.25 is a data link layer protocol and not a satellite internet service. There are some SDR's that run fully free software that will do AX.25, but prepare your wallet. In the USA and some other countries the HAM bands are restricted to the point that encryption is not allowed.I would use a better radio protocol really.

@arcana The router runs software - it comes with a modified version of openwrt and proprietary binaries and I suspect there is a backdoor to push out updates as is common on ISP routers. If there is a cr...app or JavaScript web page to control the router, you have installed software.

@arcana @Suiseiseki Only among amateur radio operators. You can talk to the ISS over AX.25 I think and can communicate across the pond with large enough antennas and powerful enough equipment, but the speed is usually 1200bits/s. It's mainly used for mesh networks I think.

@arcana @phnt Yes, you just need radio transmitters with a long enough antenna and the appropriate transmission loicences in the places you want to send packets too. There are enough of such transmitters setup on most countries setup, the main issue would be the 9600 baud transmission rate.

@phnt @Suiseiseki @dsm definitely not really needed or practical right now, but it’s a cool concept and viable in theory. I asked earlier in a thread for a map of transmitter stations that would handle internet traffic, so those exist?

@arcana It looks like the Mini doesn't have an external 8P8C port.Just because there is GPLv2-infringement happening and the software is effectively proprietary doesn't mean that "Starlink" wrote everything.
