I have not met one person - highly technical or not - who does not absolutely hate Google's AI responses. Whatever metrics they are looking at to decide to keep running them are wrong

@ricci Why does AI love trannies and faggots so much?

@verita84 @ricci I've been digging using AI for some tasks because you can use it as a search engine

@ricci Their metric is an unflagging belief that they are gods.

@ricci I was doing some competitive DB research this week and literally every single answer it gave was wrong. It even assured me that my product had implemented the feature I’m working on now and hallucinated the exact instructions to enable it!

@verita84 @ricci There's also a few alphabet people mixed in, but you are correct for pretty much everyone at the top.

@ricci I was selling my car and couldn't get the other party to agree on the market rate. Turns out they were using Google AI results, which I don't know if they were hallucinated or just outdated, instead of the official website two scrolls down.If they were the ones selling it, they might have asked R$ 7.000,00 less, or 10% lower!

@geoffduncan this comment was inspired by people saying 'nah not worth googling it's just going to give me some AI shit and I won't be able to find the actual answer', they are definitely going to hurt engagement and spend more money doing it

@ricci The more wrong answers it gives, the more time we'll spend vainly searching, thus the more ads we'll see, so there's no incentive to improve the answers now that they've dominated the search market. (Not that an LLM could provide reliably correct answers.)I'd be happy if they'd just restore the site link result behavior to where it was a decade ago, or better yet, if there were meaningful competition in search.

@banderkat but: how much more does it cost them to run AI inference vs the value of the ads they serve? My understanding is that they (and most or all others) are massively subsidizing their AI costs right now

@ricci I think the metric is "crap we burned billions on trying to keep up with the hype cycle and the investors want us to show that we didn't just light the money on fire", but what they're doing is a very bold way to try and demonstrate it.

@ricci I've seen people consider their query answered by the response before they take note of it being AI; probably just because it's at the top.

@ricci Good point. I'm guessing there's a lot of funding sloshing around that can't be realized, and no longer supports R&D, so goes to the latest fad instead. Meanwhile some execs need to make up OKRs based on the fad that they can meet. šŸ“ˆ
