The browser I use on Android (Fennec F-Droid) just switched my default search engine back to Goggle, and what's worse, completely removed Mojeek and Brave as search options. This is an anti-feature!It would be great if F-Droid builds of Android browsers stripped out the code that pulls dick moves like this.#search #SearchEngines #Android #WebBrowser #FDroid #FennecFDroid

@strypeyI can't confirm that. You must have misadjusted something.

@cantences > You must have misadjusted somethingI hope you didn't strain any muscles while jumping to that conclusion : PI adjusted nothing, except to update to the latest version, and reboot my device. Your inability to reproduce could be explained by many things. Such as an issue specific to the hardware or Android version on this device.

@strypeyThis also happened to me changing duckduckgo search back to google. It didn't happen with Firefox so there is a bug somewhere. It might be interesting for someone to track this down. I doubt it was intentional, but could lead to finding other unexpected behavior. My understanding is Fennec is a pure rebuild of Firefox without the firefox branding. There are other browsers available that make various changes to Firefox behavior. Fennec is not one of those.#search #SearchEngines #Android #WebBrowser #FDroid #FennecFDroid

@sab38 > There are other browsers available that make various changes to Firefox behaviorAny of those available in F-Droid? AFAIK other than Fennec, all the web browsers available there are wrappers around the Chrome WebView built into Android.

#TechHistory nerd side note:One outcome of the 2001 antitrust case against BorgSoft was to stop them making all web browsing on Windows depend on Internet Exploiter. The Safari WebView on iThings does *exactly* what BorgSoft were forbidden from doing.I'm guessing Goggle use various backhanded tricks to push app devs into using the Chrome WebView on Android. We're certainly at risk of future enshittification making it compulsory there too.#AntiMonopoly prosecutors take note.#AntiTrust

@strypeyPerhaps this did not happen to me because I set up a Searx instance manually. It may only affect the search engines that are registered.

@cantences > It may only affect the search engines that are registeredThat's a possibility. Maybe something to mention on that issue discussion I just tagged you about. Now I'm trying to remember if Mojeek and Brave were already in this list, or if I added them manually. I suspect you're right, because a bunch of the other ones I added were unaffected.

@strypey I used to have tons of options for most engines, now I only have a limited amount. Hope they can restore it back

@fdroidorg @strypey I sorry to ask (as user without having github experience or IT background): Can you fix it? I had Mojeek previously but this is not in the options anymore. Also Startpage Metager and all the others are gone. Its only google duckduck ecosia bing I can choose now. 😱#fennec #mojeek @rufposten

@Sunny > Can you fix it?That's the question the linked issue discussion is investigating. You can fix it by manually, by adding search options you want, and changing your default back to your preferred one. These are the generic instructions for FireFox, which ought to work;https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/change-your-default-search-settings-firefoxLet me know if you have any trouble.@fdroidorg @rufposten

(1/2)@Sunny > Couldn't delete google & coThat's the bit we need the F-Droid folks to find a way to fix, and roll out an update. Hopefully someone will be testing for this kind of enshittification before pushing future updates.

(2/2)Mozilla really has gone downhill. I'm hopeful that a whole new class of social browser is on the horizon, not controlled by DataFarmers like Goggle, grApple or BorgSoft, or indirectly by them, like Mozilla. See my recent posts quoting @robin Berjon's blog posts sketching out the future of the web.

FYI the other thing that Fennec @fdroidorg always does when it updates is nuke my PWAs. Would be great to get this fixed too in future builds.I only noticed the gaps on my homescreen this morning, and it took me a minute to figure out what was missing : P
