I've been seeing a lot of discourse around this post https://blogs.gnome.org/steven/2025/06/26/donate-less/ and monthly recurring donations and I totally get why some people are completely fatigued by monthly subs. The simplest change and I don't know why it's not an option, add a yearly recurring option, patreon does it, liberapay does it, for a lot of people one payment a year even if it works out to be the same amount feels much easier to handle plus it eliminates the fee overhead issue people are concerned with @deobald

@BrodieOnLinux bandwidth. setting up financial infrastructure is non-trivial and every change we make needs to be tested and verified — not just technically and in terms of payment processor(s), but also socially. we will not be providing half a dozen donation methods. i’ve only seen this request from one or two users so far and it doesn’t tilt the scales enough to justify the implementation. the monthly recurring revenue is also much more predictable than yearly, so it’s also more valuable to cash flow predictability. the fees are identical, less $3.30/year regardless of frequency, using our current payment processor, so the fees argument isn’t a valid justification, despite everyone constantly bringing it up with no evidence or context. :pa few people have suggested liberapay and we’ll look at it! but at the moment the immediate goal is to support more countries and currencies.

@deobald 1. Understandable that any additional changes require additional work2. I don't think you're going to convert monthly people into yearly but converting a one time donator into a yearly one seems like a fairly viable path3. I'm confused about that because you said the opposite as a reply under your post, unless you misspoke at the time4. Liberapay is a great option and they allow bulk donations that get handed out monthly

@BrodieOnLinux 2 - :nod:3 - point me to the comment where i misspoke about fees?4 - i know people who work at stripe, i know their code and infra is rock-solid, i understand their business model, what they support, and what they don’t. i can’t say the same for liberapay yet … so it requires a ton of research on our end before it will have my buy-in. we can get there. it won’t be soon. if you know hackers i should talk to who want to walk me through their impls, i’m happy to do that.
