75% of web traffic flows through Google's Chromium. Apple controls Safari. American companies control how billions access the web.Building a competitive browser alternative: ~€50-70M annually, 3-4 years. @servo proves it's technically possible with a small team. The challenge isn't technical, it's institutional: can democratic societies coordinate long-term tech projects?Read more: https://tarakiyee.com/digital-sovereignty-in-practice-web-browsers-as-a-reality-check/#DigitalSovereignty

@tarakiyee @servo You do not mention Ladybird, which seems (?) more advanced than Servo, no?

@tarakiyee @servo Part of the problem is that the Web is ***way*** too complicated so any effort to develop a *real* (all of HTML, all of CSS, all of Javascript plus a myriad of other standards) is reserved to big organisations. An alternative approach would be to rely, at least partially, on lighter systems such as Gemini https://geminiprotocol.net/

@bortzmeyer @tarakiyee @servo In which way is it more advanced? There are both technical issues with Ladybird (c++ for a web engine in 2025, seriously??) and social ones (they are a bit too happy to stay on X/Twitter where their community is and claiming to "not be political", we all know what that means).

@fabrice @tarakiyee @servo OK, if you prefer Servo because you're more in agreement with their political opinions, it's OK. But this criteria was not mentioned in the original article.Don't use programs I write, anyway, I'm still on Twitter :-)

@bortzmeyer @tarakiyee Did you ignore the technical issues on purpose? Also I have no idea what Servo's political opinions are, I only said the Ladybird team has raised red flags for me.

@bortzmeyer I didn't mention Brave either but that's not the point of the article. @servo

@bortzmeyer @tarakiyee @servo So Gemini aims to be gopher for the 21st century? I have no idea whether I'd end up using this but it definitely intrigues me.

@bortzmeyer @fabrice @tarakiyee @servo can any of you actually mention which features ladybird supports that servo doesn't, or vice-versa?

@wolf480pl @bortzmeyer @servo No, because the development is very active on both sides so supported features change all the time. You can follow @servo here, they post weekly updates on their progress.

@fabrice @bortzmeyer @servo So what you're saying is that both browsers are making advancements all the time, and depending on the day of week, either of the browsers can be in the lead?

@wolf480pl @bortzmeyer @servo kind of, yes. Also, none of them is complete enough to be used as a daily driver.
