What in the heck is a "tactical sharpie" it seems like it's just a ... shank? Like for being in prison? But what are the circumstances where a person could have a sharpie but not a pocketknife? This is the new EDC trend. Making plastic shanks out of markers. You can have a knife if it's that bad I don't get it. Is everyone in prison? What is going on?

You see, the idea of having a pocket knife is you can use it for other things and sort of think it's also a cool "weapon" that you'll never use. I don't get this "tactical sharpie" trend because it's not a sharpie anymore. You can't mark things with it ... it's just a plastic shank. And I tend to think being in any position where you'd want a "shank" is not a cool or fun time. But I think these things are just taking up space in people's bags being useless.

@futurebird There are a reasonable number of my friends who carry a Leatherman in their purses. Not having a purse, I just carry one around otherwise. They're smol, useful, fairly heavy, and serve as a heck of a lot more than just 'shank'. I don't think any single one of us would want to carry around a 'tactical sharpie'.Hell, I have a keychain sharpie floating around somewhere. It serves as a marker, and if I need to stab someone, I can just position the keys between my fingers and punch. (I don't intend to. I'm just saying, I'm a woman in 2025.)

@futurebird Is it just me, or do EDC peeps kinda give prepper vibes?Like I really wonder how often they actually get to use their EDC knife, and i also wonder if any of those times *don’t* involve opening a package they got.

@futurebird If you label something as tactical (and maybe paint it beige or camo green), you can triple the price for a certain demographic. 🤦🏻

@futurebird I had to search this to understand, yeah that's silly, there's no actual sharpie, it's just a pointy hard bit? I've heard of tactical pens but those were still pens that just had a metal body that was made to look cool and rugged and apparently be used to break a windshield to escape if your car is under water, which is at least a reasonable-ish reason for it to be tactical.

@maddiefuzz @futurebird I think it largely depends on which EDC community, I've stumbled across a sort of dumb-phone EDC trend on YouTube where they show what they carry in lieu of a smart phone.Which is like, the best because it's often fountain pen + notebook + the dumb phone + iPod or walkman. Sometimes a game boy or Nintendo DS.

@futurebird I've carried a pocketknife for most of my adult life. I have a variety, most of them are not really "self defense" items. I do have a few larger folding knives but I have nearly-never carried them. Ditto for sheath knife, as one looks a bit daft in polite society wearing one. But if solo hiking / camping deep in the boonies, just might have one at hand.IMHO the "tactical" fad is for people with issues, wanting to appear to be bad-ass.Says the guy who just revived his old iPod Nano

@futurebird These and the tactical pens and flashlights and whatnot all have the same purpose: a weapon you can carry through airport security or other places where weapons are not allowed.Airport security catches on pretty fast, but it gives you plausible deniability if they come across it. You see them sold in military stores all of the time, targeted at people who feel uncomfortable being unarmed for whatever reason.Smarter people would carry a trauma kit. You're more likely to need it.

@futurebird Reading the words "tactical sharpie" my first thought was of a normal marker pen you might carry to (for example) alter nazi graffiti spotted out in the world. The more literally "tactical" version is something I hadn't heard of before. I blame James Bond movies.

@futurebird@sauropods.win Heck, a pocketknife is a utilitarian item in theory, but in practice I'd be better off getting a low profile box cutter. I've never needed to cut anything with mine aside from cardboard boxes, tape, threads, that kind of thing.

@neia @futurebird Depends on what you end up doing, I guess.I have routinely carried small scissors and a box cutter in my backpack (except for events like protests where box cutters might be perceived as a weapon, in which case I take that out), and it turns out the scissors see much more use. Unless I'm stripping down cardboard boxes for recycling, and time is more important than fingers (which should never be so), box cutters aren't that useful.

@llewelly @neia 30 percent of the reason people think I'm "good at fixing things" is down to the fact that I have a multi-tool in my back and can always cut, unscrew or pry open whatever needs that tool. It's not that hard, but it kind of makes you seem like a wizard to some people.
