I only flew once in my life to Dublin and back and that's all within Europe so minimal checksIf I where to travel to a country where they would take my phone and demand my password I think I'm refusing"Give your password if you don't have anything to hide" is just plain bullshitEveryone has stuff to hide, even if it's a password or private noteWe should not accept this authoritarian bullshit

My parents ALWAYS used this excuse: "The gov can look into everything I do, I got nothing to hide" they said over and overAnd my reply was:"So you're okay with an agent being at your side all day everyday watching your every move?"Cause it's the same freaking thing

@stux you know it already but for everybody out there who says the same as stux parents; everybody has something to hide. You don't act the same around your friends, family or coworkers. Those are three different you's and most of the time you don't want them to mix. And even as simple with passwords and pin codes. You hide them.

@pre @stux throwaway androids are good for this. laptops without drives are also great for this. typically if i'm crossing country i rip out the drive after stuffing encrypted data into a bucket on my systems. decryption and api keys are printed as qr codes stuffed in a book. when i land and pass customs, buy a new cheap drive, iboot from a usb drive then pull all my config and build stuff over the wire at some snobby cafe. usually takes about 10 min for a full restore and build of my system. customs doesn't bother me much anymore

@stux @pre I am actually having to tell friends and family who intend to cross our US border to delete me from their phones since I tend to share anti-Trump articles a lot. I can't believe that I don't live in a free country right now, but I am also not going to pretend that I do. People have thought I was nuts for saying how compromised and dangerous Trump is but I am not pulling my punches anymore. However - I am at the same time not a doomer. I know in my gut we'll get out of this. #uspol

@stux I used to fundraise the the civil rights NGO Liberty on the streets of London, and this was the template reason I got from thousands of people. (Meaning, I've no doubt, it was a soundbite they'd been fed by the press.) My response was, what if tyrants get in or Fascism rises again? It could happen. What if they then outlaw something you do now and consider a right. It was more unthinkable back then, but was creeping in (post 9/11). I think about that A LOT now.

This is exactly what the guys from Silicon Valley are working towards this is what the NRx folk seek. They also call themselves the dark enlightenment, which means they embrace everything contrary to what Ben The identifying ideals of the west when we’re not out colonizing and killing people. These people are the most right wing imaginable they believe in absolute hierarchy, politically socially and economically, and they are at the top.

@stux Where government’s concerned, I’d say that the biggest delusion isn’t believing that one has nothing to hide, but rather that one gets to decide whether one has anything to hide. What was once no threat can easily become one when the rules change, which is something that most people have no meaningful control over. For instance, the MAHA influencers squealing about RFK Jr promoting wearables didn’t bat an eyelid at his proposal for autism registry.

@stux I realize your argument is largely hypothetical, but the reality is that if you tried to enter the US and refused to give the agents access to your devices that they found acceptable you would simply be turned around and sent back. In this instance refusal is not an option if you want to get in. Also, at least for now, I haven’t heard of any US citizens being asked to provide device access. So Bezos would t be getting special treatment.

@stux This is how you get a hitler. You should expect privacy, even from government. In the US, in the past days, you're social security number was isolated to the IRS and the social security admin. Now you can't open a bank account without giving it to them. We slowly got boiled in that pot of water and didn't notice.

@stux and as an EU citizen living in Ireland, i.e. outside the Schengen zone even those minimal passport checks are a pain in the neck. Last year we went to Prague via Düsseldorf. Off the plane in D'dorf we needed the toilet and that delayed us. We arrived at an abandoned passport control and it took ages for some bored person to come and wave us through. 2nd leg? Got off the plane in Prague and walked straight out of the airport. We should tell the UK to eff off, and join Schengen.Rant over

@stux The Republican line against crime and police terrorizing citizens has always been "If you're not doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about." They live and breathe this motto and apply it to everyone but themselves. They get trained by soul-rotted patents and defiled preachers from the manger, I mean cradle, quite actively, to be manipulators and abusers. @stux Yeah. If you must cross the border, don't bring your primary phone. Although I'm told that CBP has been told to treat the absence of a phone itself as a matter of suspicion, so you can expect some aggressive treatment if you have no phone to search.La Migra has never given me personally trouble at the airport or border, but I haven't flown during this administration. Previously, the most invasive they got with me was at a temporary highway checkpoint when driving between San Diego and Phoenix. Because our lovely courts have decided that everywhere within 100 miles of the border, warrantless search & seizure is "reasonable" in terms of the 4th amendment. Also, fully 2/3rds of the population and most major cities are within that 100 mile zone.

@stux I have a small flash drive with me that stores critical files. If contains a large file that contains a LUKS file system that can be mounted using the loopback device. The LUKS password (randomly generated) is on it too, but that is GPG encrypted, and the key ring is not with me. I've no idea as to how I could comply with a request to show them what is on it, whether there is "something to hide" or not.
