A way of thinking about ~the present day~: the internet has exactly the printing-press-scale liberatory potential boosters claimed; it was (naturally!) seized on by minoritised groups; the powerful are trying to work out how to get the genie back in the bottle.

Hate/harassment campaigns work quite well but platforms that allow them face commercial and political headwinds. Oligarchs are now self-financing platforms that allow harassment.Direct censorship is an option but is opposed by liberal values that aren't just commonplace but integral to various economic and imperial structures. It's being tried at the border in the US right now - people having their social media accounts demanded of them at customs.

I am concerned that the right understands this, in that they are horrified by all the things and worse the people they see online and want it all banned, and their oligarchs have experience of manipulating social media platforms. The left is caught between consuming the product and "tech-skepticism"Which is a real shame because we actually invented an awful lot of this shit! It just got enclosed.

In an attempt to build a bipartosan consensus in favour of building censorship tools into all online platforms.
