"32 bit libs have been stable for years, why can't they just be left alone?"Is something I've heard a lot of people saying in the wake of Fedora wanting to remove these libs but the idea of software that doesn't need to be maintained only exists in the context where the system remains static. When you're running a system that's having new hardware and new software added, and other surrounding changes, that unchanging 32 bit library is going to degrade over time through a process called bit-rot

Not because the library itself is degrading, but because it's not changing to account for the new environment it's being run in. When you look at assembly lines running 30 year old software, that works because it's running in the same environment that it's basically always been running in and doesn't have to account for new changes.

@BrodieOnLinux Good god has any of you tried building that stuff? You'd think those things are not receiving significant updates, but nah! Some stuff has even been rusted.Good luck explaining to cargo that you're building for armv7h.The devs as always move with reckless abandon and the packagers are left to sit and cry. This stuff is nightmare fuel. I perfectly understand wanting to drop them.If I were them I'd be writing an open letter to Valve to tell them "what the fuck, please update yo shit".For armv9 which lacks 32-bit support, steam will require +1 emulation layers, which raises the total to 6.

@BrodieOnLinux I wonder if they couldn't just offload this kind of thing to RPM fusion. This way, they could only work to maintain the packages that are needed to keep steam running. For one thing, steam doesn't come in the default Fedora repos anyway. This would definitely just offload the work to RPM fusion instead, but I think it could be done if everything is coordinated properly. If even this fails and I guess Bazzite could just use steam through a distrobox.

@enthusiast101 The RPM fusion team don't have the resources to take on that many packages at once

@BrodieOnLinux I guess I'm not sure how many packages would be needed to get steam to work. If it goes through, then I'm guessing fedora based gamers will have to either do use the bazzite-arch distrobox (or something similar), or use flatpak.
