Random radio gear of the day. Bought a $10 ten meter transceiver, helping to do the ham radio gear shuffle, LOL. (We all have a bunch of random gear in the garage...) #hamradio

@angiebaby @ai6yr a man was ranting on the train the other day about all sorts of nonsense. ... and at one point he started exclaiming "WHAT HAPPENED TO RADIO SHACK?!"

@rustoleumlove @angiebaby @ai6yr I watched it happen in realtime. They became CellphoneShack but forgot to change their name and then it was all downhill from there because why would you need to go to CellphoneSha- I mean RadioShack for cellphone stuff when every large store has the same stuff and usually cheaper?I used to go there a lot to get parts and stuff for various projects. I do really miss that.

@nazokiyoubinbou @rustoleumlove @angiebaby I only became aware of Radio Shack when it was "cell phone shack" and then when it was going out of business. It went out of business just as I got licensed for ham radio, so I completely missed it. Except all the vintage gear I have second hand, LOL.

@ai6yr @rustoleumlove @angiebaby You really missed out. It was a place you could go locally and they'd have all sorts of lovely parts and electronics. I mean they had everything. Potentiometers, capacitors, project cases, wires, solder (actually, they had one unpopular one that was the best solder I've ever used that has 2% silver and no rosin core,) just you name it, they probably had it. Sure a lot of stuff might be cheaper online even before they started going downhill, but generally shipping/etc would make it not worth it anyway. (Though it would have helped if they had just gotten their prices down some...)It was kind of a tech hobbyist's paradise pretty much no matter what tech you were into.

@aarbrk @nazokiyoubinbou @ai6yr @rustoleumlove @angiebaby [Grandpa shifts in his chair, clears his throat] “Back when I was a yungin’…”I remember when Radio Shack was only available as mail order. As a young child I recall discovering three catalogs in the family library: Radio Shack, Lafayette Radio Electronics, and Allied Electronics. [Grandpa leans back in his chair, closes his eyes, begins to snore…]
