Do I miss something?Google's biggest income is selling ads and with their search engine people see sponsored links but also on the pages they visit are often Google ads that make Google moneyWith their new AI search, the average click per scrape is now ~1/1500 so a lot less people are clicking on search links but use the AI summaryHow does Google not shoot itself in the foot with this money hungry AI that destroys search traffic?

@stux it’s like Betamax vs VHS. You just need to secure the market share by whatever means. Money will come later even if right now getting some “hit” with lost ad revenue?

@stux I think they sell the LLM (LLMs are not AI, never will be, and we need to stop helping corporations get away with pretending they are by calling them such) as a service to businesses and that's their real goal in that respect. They probably think by having it front-facing companies will see how "great" it is. (Lol, they have to be pretty out of reality to think people would be fooled, but then most CEOs are pretty out of reality!)That and they of course scrape every single thing people put in there to feed their databases...

@stux It doesn't have to make money now. It will advise us when we're buying things by being already in our life. I think they're counting on that making them a lot more money than you are currently thinking of.

@stux I'm sure they are, but it's slow enough that the top manglement aren't going to make the connection.Or, if they have made the connection, they reckon they can last out long enough to screw another few billion out of the process before moving on to something else just as pointless with another set of suckers to fleece.

@stux People are doing more searches now to get the ‘AI’ answers in stead of leaving the search page to other sites. So more ads and sponsored links on their own pages.

@stux That is a good point. Plus the ai accuracy is questionable. My husband found an example of inaccuracy when he was looking up info on a situation that kept cropping up in his game. Somebody said something about the adoption of calculators, how there were worries about those, but the thing about calculators is they are accurate, that is not the case with Gemini and a few other AI properties.

@stux Medium term it probably hurts them but not to sure. From their perspecitve they have to keep up, because already new "AI search engines" are (slowly) taking market share away.Thing is: Google would rather have users stay on their own page or services than anything else. This is why they're already (as they have done with search years ago) trying to monopolize, e.g. buy paying manufacterers for preinstalling Gemini in Android.

@stux as many people answered here main reason is to hold the market share. At the same time sponsored links usually lead to sites that sell something and LLMs compilations don't have anything to do with it. I think it is closer to the snippets that Google added few years ago where sites providing content are hit by lower conversion and Google's share in attention per user grows.

@stux "AI" is what gets investors excited now. Google is an investor-driven company. They are also big enough to survive when this bubble bursts.
