After a few days of mulling over the original Bladerunner, I understand why I don't like it (I know - controversial opinion incoming).1- I've started the novel it's based on, and there is a lot of important world building that is left out of the movie which really is necessary context for the story2- Deckard is too weak of a protagonist. They keep calling him a killing machine and one man slaughter house, but all he does is get his ass kicked over and over again. cont'd.

Deckard should've been given more moments of competence up front with less pathos. His character would have an arc (he learns empathy as he takes out the Nexus 6 droids) and also added to the fear of him being in danger from Roy at the end.3- In general, a movie should strike a balance between narrative and character development. Some lean more one way vice the other. This one does neither. The focus is more on enjoying the spectacle of the world they created, but that's not enough. cont'd

4- The dialogue is intentionally awkward, and it sucks. Too many non-sequitors, and too little information is conveyed (which is the point of dialogue).5- The antagonists are too unrelatable. Roy and his buds could have had their weirdness toned down and even given some signs of internal struggle or even well expressed anger at the injustice of their situation which would have made them more relatable and sympathetic. The story is THERE, it's just not communicated to the audience.cont'd

@DaddyO part of it was when it came out, it was gritty sci-fi before there was any real gritty sci-fi.Also, for the time it looks unbelievable.I was never a huge fan, but i appreciate the things it did well, because it did them VERY well. Also, the entire movie could have been static and just had the Rutger Hauer scenes and i would still give it an "A".Tears in rain, fucking epic.

6- It's pacing is terrible, and the directing is too lazy. There are too many never-ending establishing shots that could be either reduced by half or removed - a few shots of characters walking are fine to show off the world building, but over and over and over again and it's wearing out audience patience. And you could eliminate the entire sequence where he goes after the snake lady and it literally makes no difference to the movie (except cuts down the run time). Those are my thoughts.

@Richard Yes - it gets credit for being a genre-creator. You can see that about every dystopian movie and show that came afterwards borrowed from it. These are just my thoughts looking at it from outside any nostalgia filters and thinking to myself that it could have been so much better. Sometimes, the hype around a movie actually hurts the movie when it's seen out of the context of the hype. But then Alphaville is another movie that many praise that I didn't understand. So maybe it's me.

@DaddyO I think I mostly agree with you. Bladerunner is one of those movies (like most Sci Fi movies really) where the world building takes center stage and won’t let plot, or characters get a word in edgewise.

@DaddyO Yeah of course you don't appreciate it... you should have watched it 42 years ago when it first came out. In it's day it was avante-guarde and apart from use of CRT screens has aged very well (I'm sure with current CGI techniques they could update the screens to be flat screen). It still presents a believable alternative timeline.

@fuknukl I like when the future has CRTs. It gives everything an artificially suppressed feel. Like East Germany @DaddyO
